Maintenance Officer

Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Maintenance Officer to join Cardijn College, a reputable R-12 Catholic educational institution in the Southern Vales region of Adelaide. Established in 1984 and grounded in the Marist tradition, Cardijn College serves over 2,100 students across three campuses, supported by more than 300 staff members. This permanent full-time role offers 48 weeks of work per year, with an immediate start.

Role Summary

The Maintenance Officer will be responsible for a wide range of tasks to ensure that all school buildings, facilities, and physical environments are well maintained, safe, and operational in accordance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies. The role requires maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of building exteriors, managing rubbish and recycling, and performing various general duties as assigned. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the officer will collaborate closely with a team of Maintenance and Grounds Officers and engage with contractors as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

• Performing routine inspections and keeping accurate maintenance records.
• Ensuring tools and equipment are maintained and repaired as needed.
• Maintaining safety and functionality of buildings, play areas, and fixtures.
• Coordinating with contractors to ensure projects meet compliance and standards.
• Supporting WHS efforts by adhering to safety policies, providing protective equipment, and participating in workplace safety activities.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a skilled Education Support Officer in Maintenance with a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence. Key attributes include technical competency in building and grounds upkeep, gardening and turf management experience, and proficiency in operating minor plant equipment such as chainsaws, lawn mowers, and trimmers. The incumbent should be a proactive team player with excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational abilities, able to work independently while maintaining high standards.

Essential Qualifications and Licenses

• Current driver's license.
• Relevant First Aid Certificate.
• Valid Working with Children Clearance and screening for Catholic Education SA.
• Certification in Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse, and Neglect – Education and Care.
• Capability to undertake role-specific training such as working at heights and ladder safety.
• Knowledge of building regulations and statutory requirements.

Additional Requirements

• Availability to respond to service or security issues outside regular hours.
• Completion of Manual Handling, WHS certifications, White Card, safe chainsaw operation, and herbicide/pesticide training (supported by the College).
• Commitment to professional boundaries and confidentiality.
• Maintaining a neat, practical dress standard and appropriate personal protective gear.
