Lecturer in Bacteriology – Full-Time Specific Purpose Contract

Position Overview

University of Galway invites applications for a full-time (1 FTE) specific purpose contract position as Lecturer in Bacteriology under Contract Type A. The successful candidate will become part of the Discipline of Bacteriology within the School of Medicine, engaging in teaching across a variety of undergraduate programs including medicine, pharmacy, nursing, midwifery, health sciences, and natural sciences. Postgraduate supervision for M.Sc. and PhD students is also expected.

Research and Academic Contribution

The discipline's research initiatives are organized via the Antimicrobial Resistance and Microbial Ecology (ARME) Group, focusing on antimicrobial resistance, food- and waterborne infections, emerging contaminants, societal impacts of infectious diseases, and the One Health approach. The selected applicant should align their research interests with these themes, complementing current academic staff efforts.

Responsibilities

• Deliver microbiology education to diverse tertiary-level student groups.
• Engage actively in research complementary to departmental themes.
• Support outreach and communication activities within the Discipline of Bacteriology, ARME Group, and Ryan Institute Centre for One Health.

Candidate Requirements

• PhD in Microbiology, Pharmacy, or a closely related field.
• Experience teaching microbiology to university-level students from varied backgrounds.
• Demonstrated ongoing dedication to high-quality teaching.

Terms and Conditions

The Lecturer position includes a salary range from €65,552 to €104,573 per annum (pro rata), corresponding to the lecturer pay scale effective from January 2011 and aligned with government pay policies and university remuneration guidelines. Appointment depends on university approval and compliance with the higher education sector employment control framework. Garda vetting may be required.
