Position Overview

The K-12 Art Teacher role involves creating an inclusive and dynamic studio setting that encourages artistic development, critical thinking, and cultural understanding for students from kindergarten through high school. The teacher will adapt instructional techniques to suit elementary beginners, mid-level skill development in middle school, and advanced portfolio and art history preparation for high school students. Key responsibilities include curriculum planning, classroom leadership, and promoting visual arts within the school and its community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver age-appropriate art curricula from K-12 that adhere to state and national educational standards.
  • Teach diverse artistic media such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, and digital art.
  • Integrate elements of art history, criticism, and aesthetics into engaging, hands-on student projects.
  • Customize instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including IEP and 504 accommodations.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and well-equipped art studio, including handling specialized equipment like kilns.
  • Manage budget, supplies, and inventory for the art department.
  • Foster a classroom environment that supports creative risk-taking and artistic growth.
  • Coordinate community exhibitions and collaborate on interdisciplinary projects with other educators.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and school administrators regarding student progress and development.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or a related discipline; Master's degree preferred.
  • Valid state teaching certification/licensure with K-12 visual arts endorsement.
  • Robust personal artistic portfolio and examples of diverse student artwork demonstrating technical skill.
  • Prior student teaching or professional experience teaching multiple grade levels is highly desirable.
  • Hands-on proficiency with studio equipment such as ceramic kilns, pottery wheels, printing presses, and mat cutters.
  • Competence in digital art design tools like Adobe Creative Cloud, Procreate, Canva, or 3D modeling software.
  • Familiarity with educational technologies including learning management systems like Google Classroom, Canvas, or Seesaw.
  • Skills in digital documentation, photographing, and editing student artwork for portfolios and school promotions.
  • Ability to adapt teaching approaches for different age groups, from basic motor skills for younger children to conceptual critiques for high schoolers.
  • Creative problem-solving for budget constraints, lesson adjustments, and supporting students’ artistic challenges.
  • Patient and empathetic mentorship to nurture confidence and challenge students appropriately.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple ongoing projects and classes efficiently.
