Job Overview and Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed analysis of biopsy, surgical, and autopsy tissue samples under a microscope to identify normal and pathological changes.
- Diagnose a wide array of conditions such as cancers, infections, inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, and degenerative diseases.
- Confirm cancer presence, and provide precise tumor typing, grading, staging, and assessment of surgical margins and lymph node involvement.
- Oversee the correct processing of tissue samples including fixation, embedding, sectioning, and staining.
- Interpret specialized stains and perform advanced diagnostic procedures including immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology tests, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and digital pathology image analysis.
- Prepare timely and clear pathology reports and effectively communicate findings to treating physicians.
- Collaborate closely with surgical, oncological, radiological, and other medical teams within multidisciplinary settings for patient management.
- Uphold quality assurance by maintaining laboratory standards, safety protocols, and accreditation compliance.
- Educate medical students, pathology trainees, lab personnel, and other healthcare workers, providing guidance on specimen collection and handling.
- Engage in research activities aimed at understanding disease mechanisms and advancing diagnostic techniques, including biomarker development.
- Conduct autopsies when relevant, establishing causes of death and contributing to medical education and public health initiatives.
