Freelance Chatbot Developer (WhatsApp / Telegram / Discord)

Role Overview

This freelance opportunity is for a bot developer to support a Tendem project focused on conversational automation across WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, and comparable messaging channels. The work sits inside a hybrid AI plus human workflow, where AI-assisted agents take care of repetitive steps while you contribute technical judgment, chatbot engineering, and quality assurance to keep the bots dependable and ready for real-world use.

The assignment is suited to professionals who have practical experience creating messaging bots, connecting to platform APIs and webhooks, and building conversation logic that performs reliably in production. The work is remote and part-time.

What You Will Work On

In this role, you will develop, improve, and maintain bots for messaging environments such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, and similar platforms. These bots may support customer service, booking flows, order handling, content distribution, moderation tasks, and automated alerts.

Core Responsibilities

• Create bots for WhatsApp Business API / Cloud API, Telegram Bot API, Discord, and similar messaging ecosystems.
• Plan and implement conversational journeys, dialogue progression, and fallback logic.
• Connect bots with LLM services such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or equivalent tools when natural language generation is useful.
• Link bots to backend systems, databases, CRMs, and external APIs such as booking tools, payment services, and content feeds.
• Work with webhooks, message limits, and platform-specific payload formats, including interactive messages, buttons, media, and templates.
• Review AI-generated bot code, correct defects, and improve it for stability, accuracy, and robust error handling.
• Set up logging, monitoring, and recovery mechanisms so bots remain healthy in production.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience in backend development, integration work, automation, or bot development.
• At least 1 year of practical experience building bots for major messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, or similar.
• Strong working knowledge of Python or Node.js for backend bot logic.
• Good command of REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth, and asynchronous request processing.
• Experience working with relational databases or NoSQL databases to store conversation state and user data.
• Exposure to LLM APIs such as OpenAI or Anthropic, along with prompt design for conversational use cases, is a strong advantage.
• Understanding of platform rules, approval processes, and message template constraints, including WhatsApp template messaging.
• Experience deploying applications using Docker, serverless environments, VPS, or PaaS solutions.
• High attention to detail and a strong focus on reliability, with no tolerance for silent failures or broken user journeys.
• Ability to work independently and deliver complete bot solutions without close supervision.
• A portfolio or samples of bots you have built.
• English level of upper-intermediate B2 or higher.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field is an advantage.

Workload and Time Expectations

The expected workload during active phases is approximately 10 to 20 hours per week. This is an estimate only and is not guaranteed; it applies only while the project is active.

Compensation

Contributors may earn up to the equivalent of 60 USD per hour on this project, depending on expertise and delivery pace. Pay may differ across other projects depending on scope, complexity, and required specialization.
