About City Cast DC Editor Role
City Cast DC is looking for an experienced and motivated editor to support and edit a team of local journalists covering multiple topics and formats. Reporting to the Managing Editor, this role acts as a deputy editor, managing the daily editing tasks and shaping the newsroom's coverage strategy. The candidate should be deeply passionate about journalism, able to drive distinctive local news coverage, and skilled at crafting stories that work across different media such as articles, newsletters, podcasts, and social media channels.
The editor will play a key role in growing City Cast DC’s newsroom, requiring enthusiasm for building and guiding a team from the ground up.
Key Responsibilities
- Mentor and edit reporters daily by providing clear instructions, constructive critiques, and support.
- Review story proposals, assist reporters in refining story angles, spotting missing elements, and prioritizing coverage areas.
- Edit newsletters and written materials to ensure clarity, structure, distinct voice, and factual accuracy according to City Cast DC’s standards.
- Work collaboratively with podcast and social media teams to adapt stories effectively across platforms.
- Utilize audience data and reader feedback to steer editorial choices and continually improve content strategy.
- Oversee fact-checking and maintain fairness and accuracy throughout the editing process.
- Coordinate editorial workflows, deadlines, and publishing schedules to ensure smooth newsroom operations.
- Provide coaching and career development support to reporters, helping them improve as writers and journalists visible to the public.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum 2 to 3 years experience in editing and managing reporters within local or regional news organizations.
- Demonstrated strong editorial judgment and ability to elevate reported stories.
- Meticulous with a high standard for accuracy, fairness, and diligent fact-checking.
- Comfortable working in high-pressure, deadline-oriented newsrooms.
- Excellent communication and management skills, including the capacity to give effective feedback and set clear expectations.
- Knowledge of cross-platform storytelling and how to translate written journalism into audio and social media formats.
- Familiarity with audience metric analysis to inform editorial decisions is advantageous.
- A genuine interest and understanding of the nuances and complexity of DC communities.
Additional Information
This full-time position reports directly to the Managing Editor of City Cast DC. Although the role requires the candidate to be local to Washington, DC, the primary work setting will be remote. The annual salary range is between $80,000 and $125,000, based on experience.
