Role Overview
Joining the Systems Engineering team as a Junior to Mid-level Database Administrator, you will assist in managing and enhancing Azure SQL environments. This role provides a collaborative international environment where you can develop your cloud database skills under the guidance of senior professionals.
Main Responsibilities
- Assist with daily administration of Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance environments, working alongside senior team members.
- Monitor database health utilizing Azure Monitor, Azure Metrics, and Query Performance Insight; report anomalies and document findings.
- Help investigate performance issues by identifying slow queries, analyzing execution plans, and applying optimizations with support.
- Perform backup and restoration using Azure Backup services and automated policies.
- Participate in routine recovery tests to ensure data integrity and availability.
- Manage access controls including logins, roles, and permissions based on least-privilege principles.
- Support patching and updates in non-production environments and prepare documentation for review before production deployment.
- Collaborate with development teams on reviewing database schemas to anticipate deployment issues.
- Develop T-SQL scripts and PowerShell automation to streamline repetitive tasks.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation, including runbooks, backup schedules, access matrices, and incident logs.
- Engage in on-call rotations with senior administrators to gain incident management experience.
- Monitor Azure resource costs, identifying any unusual usage and suggesting scaling options.
Qualifications
- 1 to 3 years of experience in database administration.
- Practical experience with Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance.
- Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or newer versions.
- Strong skills in SQL and T-SQL for query writing, stored procedures, and basic scripting.
- Comfortable using Azure Portal and managing cloud-based databases.
- Understanding of database backup, restore, and recovery methodologies.
- Knowledgeable about database security practices including managing logins, roles, and permissions.
- Experience or familiarity with Azure Monitor, PowerShell, Azure CLI, or similar automation/monitoring tools is a plus.
- Aware of high availability strategies such as geo-replication and failover groups.
- Exposure to DevOps practices for databases, including CI/CD pipelines and schema deployment.
- Excellent communication skills, a strong team-oriented approach, and the ability to stay calm during pressure.
- Self-driven with eagerness to learn and apply modern cloud technologies and automation.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within an international team environment.
- Fluency in English is essential.
