Position Overview
Serving under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, this Custodian role focuses on maintaining cleanliness, hygiene, and the overall upkeep of school facilities in Cascade, MT. Primarily part-time and non-exempt, the role involves varied cleaning and maintenance duties essential for the safety and well-being of students in line with the District's Strategic Plan.
Compensation and Incentives
The starting wage is $17 per hour. New hires receive a signing bonus: $1,250 for part-time custodians working fewer than 37.5 hours per week, distributed in two payments—one after 3 months ($500) and another after 6 months ($750). Full-time custodians receive a higher signing bonus accordingly.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing floors, vacuuming carpets, dusting, polishing furniture, and washing windows and walls.
- Maintain restrooms by cleaning, replenishing supplies, and refilling dispensers.
- Keep the exterior areas clean and safe, including watering landscaping in the absence of grounds staff.
- Arrange furniture and equipment for school events and activities.
- Inspect buildings for repair needs and perform minor fixes when possible.
- Secure buildings after shifts and handle trash collection and disposal.
- Respond to emergency cleanups from incidents like vandalism or spills.
- Prepare and paint interior/exterior surfaces as needed.
- Order, receive, store, and distribute janitorial supplies.
- Report any unusual or concerning student behavior and maintain cooperation with school staff.
Qualifications and Skills
- No prior custodial experience required but preferred; a high school diploma or equivalent is desirable.
- Good physical health, capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Familiarity with cleaning methods, materials, and equipment for various surfaces.
- Knowledge of safety practices relevant to custodial work.
- Ability to operate specialized cleaning tools such as vacuums, floor polishers, and floor strippers.
- Self-motivated with ability to work independently and follow schedules and instructions.
- Capable of maintaining accurate work records and reports.
- Effective interpersonal skills to maintain positive working relationships.
- Manage stressful situations and time efficiently.
Work Environment
The role requires working indoors and outdoors with exposure to moderate noise. Employees must meet deadlines under time constraints and be flexible in adapting tasks. Physical activities include walking, standing, bending, pushing equipment, and climbing. Visual abilities and physical fitness are important.
