Role Summary

The Chief Mate position is a full-time, onsite role based in Port Harcourt. Reporting to the Master, the Chief Mate will oversee the safe and efficient functioning of escort and security vessels. This includes supervising all deck operations, managing navigation watches, coordinating cargo and equipment handling, and ensuring strict adherence to safety and security protocols. The Chief Mate is also responsible for leading deck crew, executing safety drills and briefings, and maintaining all operational and incident-related documentation. The role involves communication and coordination with clients and internal stakeholders to uphold mission readiness and conform to company maritime security standards.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must hold a valid Chief Mate or equivalent deck officer license with experience aboard security, escort, or support vessels.
  • In-depth understanding of maritime safety standards, including SOLAS and ISPS Code, alongside expertise in risk management in high-risk maritime settings.
  • Proven skills in navigation, ship handling, voyage planning, and watchkeeping duties.
  • Strong leadership capabilities to manage and mentor deck crew, conduct safety exercises, and foster a safety-first culture on board.
  • Effective communication aptitudes to work closely with the Master, crew members, clients, and shore operations.
  • Ability to operate effectively under pressure in demanding maritime environments, demonstrating strong situational awareness and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with escort vessel operations, maritime security protocols, and incident reporting is advantageous.
  • Educational background from a maritime academy or in nautical science; additional certifications in security or risk management are desirable.
