Role Overview

This full-time position is based in London and/or Shanghai with a hybrid working arrangement. The chosen candidate will join as a founding executive, shaping the scientific framework and AI research strategy of the Mining World Model. This role involves directing the AI research agenda in collaboration with co-founders and an expert scientific team comprised of PhDs and specialists from fields such as mathematics, AI, data science, and geology. The mission is to merge advanced AI techniques with in-depth domain knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

Monitor and assess the latest trends in AI research covering foundation models, agentic systems, probabilistic and physics-informed methods, as well as spatial and multi-modal learning, determining their applicability to the Mining World Model.
Design the AI architecture underpinning the World Model, focusing on transforming multi-modal geoscience data into probabilistic subsurface models while effectively quantifying and communicating uncertainties.
Lead the AI research team and collaborate closely with the CTO to drive research, development, and product deployment from conception through to delivery.
Establish scientific standards for AI operations including reproducibility, validation against empirical data, and transparent modeling of limitations.
Act as the technical spokesperson for Deep Optica with clients, investors, and collaborators, influencing product roadmaps and company strategy.
Grow and mentor a top-tier AI research division in alignment with company expansion.

Candidate Profile

Possess a PhD or equivalent advanced research experience in machine learning, applied mathematics, statistics, physics, or a related quantitative discipline.
Exhibit a profound understanding of current AI developments, capable of critically evaluating, reproducing, and distinguishing impactful innovations from hype.
Proven success in transitioning machine learning research projects to operational systems, preferably involving scientific, geospatial, or physical data domains.
Expertise in probabilistic techniques and uncertainty quantification, integral to the role.
Experience with at least one of the following: 3D or spatial deep learning, graph neural networks, physics-informed machine learning, foundation models, or large-scale Bayesian inference.
Proficient in contemporary machine learning engineering practices.
Demonstrated leadership capability to guide research teams and define technical roadmaps.
Keen interest in the physical sciences, a desire to ground models in geology, and an eagerness to collaborate with domain specialists.
Strong communication skills to explain model mechanics, assumptions, and uncertainties effectively to diverse audiences including non-technical stakeholders.
Comfortable working within multicultural and global teams.
Experience or exposure to mining or geosciences is advantageous but not mandatory.
