Biology Expert (Remote Contract)

Role overview

This is a short-term remote contract for a Biology specialist to help create, solve, and refine advanced biology problems used for evaluating large language models. The assignment runs for 11 weeks, requires 8 working hours per day, and includes 4 hours of overlap with Pacific Standard Time. The expected start is immediate, or as soon as possible.

Compensation is $450 per task, subject to approval.

Key responsibilities

• Build difficult Biology questions and solve them to test and assess LLM performance.
• Prepare clear, stepwise solutions with thorough scientific reasoning.
• Work with LLM research teams on benchmark design and reasoning-oriented evaluation tasks.
• Contribute to the creation of new benchmarks covering Biology topics from undergraduate level through PhD level.
• Tackle complex biological problems using a logical, structured approach.
• Present Biology ideas in an easy-to-understand way, including visuals or simulations when useful.

Requirements

• Applicants should have a Master's degree, Ph.D., or be currently pursuing a Ph.D. or postdoctoral position in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a closely related discipline.
• Hands-on proficiency in at least three of the listed scientific or bioinformatics tools is required, such as BWA, Bowtie2, GATK, HMMER, HHsuite, STAR, SPAdes, IQ-TREE, OpenMM, AlphaFold2, PyOpenMS, RELION, PhysiCell, COPASI, Comet, COBRApy, Hifiasm, ABySS, DeepVariant, Flye, OR-Tools, Bracken, Kraken2, MEGAHIT, antiSMASH, BEAST2, FastTree, DIA-NN, Percolator, AutoDock Vina, CP2K, Salmon, MethylDackel, Canu, or GROMACS.
• Strong research ability and analytical thinking are important.
• Creative problem-solving and lateral thinking are needed.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, plus strong remote collaboration skills, are expected.
