Role Overview

Soul Atlas is seeking a background illustrator to support an ongoing comic book project built around a realistic fantasy world. The work is part of a larger creative universe that also includes films, games, music, and internal marketing operations. The team is looking for someone who can start quickly and contribute to production immediately.

About the Project and Company

The company develops stories, visuals, and interactive projects within its own fantasy setting. What began as a small team building a TV-related package has expanded into a large creative group working across short films, a comic series, a card game, and a tabletop role-playing game. The team is currently focused on strengthening workflows, preparing launches, and moving projects toward commercial release.

What You Will Do

• Design detailed environments and background art for the graphic novel in collaboration with foreground artists, art directors, and producers.
• Turn briefs and concepts into polished, production-ready background illustrations.
• Collect reference material and build mood boards and visual studies that extend the existing concept work.
• Maintain a consistent realistic-fantasy look that matches the project’s visual style guide.
• Create a wide range of scenes, including natural landscapes, buildings, interiors, crowd scenes, and mood-driven atmospheric settings.
• Coordinate with concept artists and other illustrators to keep visual continuity across scenes and assets.
• Revise artwork based on creative feedback and changing production needs.

• A proactive mindset and a willingness to keep improving artistic skills.
• Solid background in environment or background illustration, whether natural, architectural, or both.
• Good command of perspective, lighting, composition, and spatial depth.
• Ability to create immersive visuals that support storytelling and atmosphere.
• Comfort working within an established realistic fantasy style and adapting to it.
• Clear, dependable, and timely communication.
• Professional English communication skills.
• Understanding of how lighting supports narrative, mood, time of day, and cinematic framing.
• Ability to handle layered files and prepare artwork in production-ready formats.

Bonus Experience

• Previous experience in comic production pipelines or cinematic-style environments.
• Familiarity with 3D software such as Blender for layout, perspective support, or blockouts.

Time Commitment

The role is intended to be part-time, with an estimated workload of around 5 to 15 hours per week. The schedule is flexible from week to week, and you are expected to set boundaries and communicate your availability clearly.

Compensation

There is no fixed salary for this position. Instead, the project offers profit participation through a royalty-style arrangement that is being developed for team members. The team describes this as an investment-based collaboration in which time contributed is exchanged for a future share of profits/royalties, without upfront taxation. A detailed compensation breakdown will be shared during the interview stage for candidates who request it.
