Role Overview

We are seeking a driven Senior Power System Engineer to join our Power Networks team in Christchurch, supporting the delivery of grid connection projects for large-scale renewable energy developments across the National Electricity Market (NEM) and the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM). Under the mentorship of the Power Systems Technical Director, you will engage in technical studies, regulatory processes, modelling, and compliance activities across wind, solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), hybrid projects, and traditional synchronous generation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist clients with grid connection procedures from feasibility assessments through to generator registration and commissioning phases.
  • Prepare and manage connection enquiries and applications (including R0 and R1 stages), Grid Protection Settings (GPS) documentation, compliance submissions, and consultancy inputs.
  • Coordinate and contribute to power system studies and modelling initiatives utilizing software such as PSCAD, PSS®E, and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Support grid commissioning processes and GPS compliance efforts, including hold point tests, R2 model validation, and plant alteration procedures following relevant NER and ESM Rules.
  • Draft technical reports, documentation, and official correspondence for regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal teams across development, engineering, and project delivery to facilitate grid program planning and risk management.
  • Engage in discussions and meetings with AEMO, Western Power, VicGrid, Network Service Providers (NSPs), clients, and consultants alongside senior engineers.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulatory frameworks within NEM and WEM, including Network Rules and requirements.
  • Mentor junior team members in grid connection, compliance, modelling, and regulatory processes.

Candidate Profile

  • Possesses a degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
  • Experience working on power systems, grid studies, or renewable energy projects within the NEM and/or WEM regions.
  • Basic understanding of the NEM and/or WEM frameworks, Network Rules (NER/ESM), and connection protocols of Network Service Providers.
  • Hands-on exposure to hold point testing and commissioning practices.
  • Proficiency in power system simulation tools such as PSCAD, PSS®E, and/or DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Familiarity with Python scripting fundamentals.
  • Strong analytical skills combined with the ability to produce clear, well-structured technical reports.
  • Effective communication capabilities and a strong enthusiasm for continual learning.

What We Offer

  • Direct involvement in sophisticated and high-visibility renewable energy grid connection projects.
  • Mentorship from seasoned grid engineers and leadership by the Power Systems Technical Director.
  • Structured technical growth including advanced training and professional certification support.
  • Opportunities to expand specialist knowledge across both NEM and WEM markets.
  • Chance to contribute to pivotal projects advancing the low-carbon energy transition.
  • Flexible work arrangements, inclusive leadership, and a values-driven organizational culture that cherishes senior expertise.
  • Recognition for individual contributions and collaboration within diverse, multidisciplinary teams.
