Assistant Construction Manager - Civil Engineering

Overview

The Assistant Construction Manager – Civil will oversee all civil construction tasks within electrical substation projects ranging from 33kV to 220kV and above. The role ensures that foundations, structural elements, roads, drainage, and ancillary civil works are delivered safely, conform to designs, stay on schedule, and meet budget requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze and review civil design drawings, specifications, and scope details specific to substations.
• Create, implement, and monitor schedules specifically for civil construction activities.
• Coordinate closely with electrical and mechanical teams to align civil construction with overall installation phases.
• Plan construction sequencing covering earthworks, foundation pours, equipment structures, and building infrastructure.
• Oversee site preparations including clearing, excavation, grading, and leveling to specified platform levels.
• Manage soil compaction and ground improvement efforts, integrating geotechnical recommendations based on soil analyses.
• Supervise foundational works for key substation equipment such as power transformers, circuit breakers, gantry and bus supports, and instrument transformer foundations ensuring accurate load capacity and anchor bolt arrangement.
• Manage erection of substation buildings including control rooms, relay rooms, GIS buildings (when applicable), security posts, cable cellars, and trenches, ensuring compliance with architectural and structural standards.
• Direct construction of cable trenches, duct banks, and vaults ensuring proper spatial arrangements for cable installations and effective coordination with electrical installation teams.
• Control installation of drainage systems including oil containment pits, stormwater drains, and collection pools ensuring appropriate grading for water flow management.
• Supervise construction of internal access roads, heavy equipment paths, boundary walls, fencing, gates, and site entrances.
• Support civil works related to substation grounding grid installations including trench preparation and backfilling for earthing conductors.
• Coordinate procurement and onsite delivery of essential construction materials such as concrete, reinforcement steel, structural steel, and precast elements. Manage labor, machinery, and subcontractors.
• Supervise quality control testing including concrete slump and cube strength tests, soil compaction verification, and reinforcement inspections prior to concreting.
• Monitor daily civil construction progress; generate weekly and monthly status reports; identify and address delays by implementing corrective measures in collaboration with project leadership, consultants, and clients.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should possess prior experience in civil construction management, preferably in power substation projects. Hands-on familiarity with reviewing engineering drawings, managing subcontractors, and conducting technical inspections is essential.
