Job description
Overview
The Tax Engine team at Amazon is seeking a highly motivated and innovative science leader to advance its scientific initiatives. This team supports all Amazon e-commerce orders worldwide by accurately computing and collecting tax amounts. Responsibilities include categorizing products in the Amazon catalog for tax purposes based on country, state, and county, and performing precise tax calculations (sales tax and VAT) both for physical and digital goods. The platform tackles complex global tax regulations, enabling tax computations thousands of times per second with near-perfect accuracy.
The science efforts involve leveraging large-scale language models for tax classification amidst a broad set of challenges including predictive and generative AI tasks, language understanding, causal inference, and active learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and guide a skilled team comprising senior Applied Scientists and software developers.
- Enhance methodologies and processes related to the team's deliverables.
- Maintain a balance between experimentation and consistent delivery to ensure lasting impact and sustainable progress.
- Collaborate with stakeholders and customers to chart the roadmap for new products and services.
Required Qualifications
- Over 3 years experience managing scientists or machine learning engineers.
- Strong knowledge of machine learning, natural language processing, information retrieval, and analytics.
- At least 3 years experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven track record developing complex software systems, especially those incorporating deep learning, machine learning, and computer vision, successfully delivered to end-users.
- Experience engaging with users, technical teams, and management to gather requirements, explain software features, and design technical solutions.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary range for this role in Vancouver, BC is CAD 222,800 to 372,000. Compensation packages may include additional components such as sign-on bonuses and restricted stock units.
