Accountant

About the Role

Save the Children International is looking for a dedicated Accountant to join their team in Kampala, Uganda. This position involves supporting the country office with accurate financial management, including supplier payments, advances, bank and petty cash transactions, and maintaining detailed and organized financial records. The role contributes to budgeting, financial reporting, audit facilitation, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage bank and petty cash transactions adhering strictly to SCI finance policies and ensure regular reconciliations.
• Record daily financial entries and coordinate with Senior Accountant for approvals and system uploads.
• Ensure adequate cash balances in all accounts, including mobile money wallets, and coordinate payment approvals.
• Collaborate with HR to monitor staff timesheet submissions and assist with allocating budget codes for effort reporting.
• Process weekly supplier payments, resolve payment issues, and maintain up-to-date supplier records in financial systems.
• Prepare quarterly VAT reports according to donor requirements and work with field teams to ensure VAT compliance.
• Reconcile balance sheet accounts weekly, including tax and statutory contributions.
• Handle journal entries related to shared cost allocation methodologies and review relevant transactions weekly.
• Maintain and safely archive both physical and electronic financial documents to facilitate audits and retrieval.
• Enforce internal controls over cash and bank transactions and ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
• Provide documentation and explanations supporting audit activities related to payments.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Administration (Accounting), or related field.
• Proficiency in local language and direct engagement with community stakeholders is preferred.
• Strong teamwork skills and ability to work collaboratively in diverse settings.
• Willingness to travel to remote or challenging locations and work extended hours during humanitarian responses.
• Excellent computer literacy, particularly in documentation and financial systems.
• High cultural awareness with experience working in international, multicultural environments.
• Effective time management with strong planning capabilities.
