About the Role and Company
Based in Cologne, Germany, this position offers a part-time working student or internship opportunity within the Engineering team reporting to the CTO. The role involves contributing to ilert's mission-critical SaaS platform that aids DevOps and IT teams worldwide in quickly detecting, resolving, and communicating incidents. The platform features a robust backend processing thousands of events per second and an intuitive frontend designed for use under pressure.
Responsibilities
- Deliver complete features by developing user-facing components using React and TypeScript, creating the supporting backend APIs, or both.
- Design and enhance stable backend APIs and data pipelines primarily using Java and Rust, and work with distributed systems such as Kafka and ClickHouse.
- Develop and maintain modular frontend components to ensure a responsive, accessible, and reliable user interface during critical situations.
- Engage in diverse projects ranging from core alerting functionalities to integrations with platforms like Slack, MS Teams, and Jira, as well as AI-driven site reliability engineering features, tailored to your interests.
- Emphasize code quality and platform reliability by writing tests and maintaining clean, maintainable code since uptime is vital.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a relevant technical field such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Informatics.
- Practical coding experience with parts of the technology stack, including React/TypeScript for frontend and any backend language like Java, Go, Rust, Python, or Node.js.
- Strong understanding of computer science basics like data structures, algorithms, and familiarity with web application components including APIs, databases, and version control (Git).
- A passion for engineering quality software with clean, maintainable code and enthusiasm to learn professional SaaS product development, testing, and deployment.
- A curious builder mindset; additional credit for personal or open source projects demonstrating software delivered across frontend, backend, or AI domains.
- Fluent English proficiency, as it's the team's working language.
Benefits
- Opportunity to make a significant impact by enhancing tools used globally by engineers managing incidents.
- Flexibility to explore and specialize in frontend, backend, or full-stack development prior to graduation.
- Hybrid working model with 3 days per week onsite at the Cologne Rheinauhafen office and 2 days remote from home.
- Work schedule flexibility accommodating academic commitments such as lectures and exams.
- Access to experienced mentors dedicated to supporting your professional growth.
- A culture emphasizing uninterrupted focused work time, low meeting overhead, and predominantly asynchronous communication.
