Role Overview

This position is based at various locations throughout Moira Shire, potentially requiring work commencement from multiple sites.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Operate plant and machinery safely and efficiently, adhering to operational standards and promptly reporting defects or issues per occupational health and safety protocols.
  • Accurately record all transactions and site activities, managing payments via an EFTPOS cashless system and ensuring appropriate charging according to Moira Shire Council’s fee policies for residential, commercial, and industrial waste.
  • Create and maintain detailed records, submitting reports to management timely and accurately.
  • Maintain a discrimination-free workplace, actively participate in vocational training, attend team meetings, and collaborate with other operators.
  • Work independently for extended periods, sometimes in remote locations.
  • Ensure the efficient operation of waste collection facilities, focusing on waste diversion, recycling, and the minimization of landfill deposits.
  • Maintain transfer stations and landfill sites to prescribed standards; direct customers appropriately regarding recycling, reuse, and disposal procedures.
  • Follow best practices and comply with policies from Moira Shire Council, EPA, Ecorecycle Victoria, and Work Safe.
  • Conduct regular audits and maintain site compliance with applicable regulations and license conditions.
  • Provide input and actively contribute to ongoing improvements and program development related to waste management operations.
  • Assist in rehabilitation plan development and participate in relevant meetings.
  • Prepare accurate reports covering material volumes, weights, income, plant operational hours, and maintenance checks.
  • Coordinate bin transfers and recyclables collection as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with site and landfill staff to ensure smooth operations.
  • Monitor traffic management and signage on site.
  • Reconcile daily cash receipts following council policies, exercise discretion in customer site access, and manage conduct in line with the Council’s code of ethics.
  • Uphold high standards of customer service, assist in complaint resolution, and provide informed guidance on waste operations.
  • Represent the Council professionally in all community and customer interactions.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Current driver’s license
  • Ability and willingness to pass a National Police Check
  • Experience operating landfill/transfer stations and familiarity with relevant regulations
  • Strong communication skills and computer literacy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Heavy articulated vehicle license
  • Traffic Controller Certificate
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Certifications for operation of additional plant or equipment used by the Council
