Position Overview
NHS Western Isles invites applications for the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) Health Visitor Trainee role based in Uist and Barra. This fixed-term opportunity aligns with a commitment to enhancing wellbeing outcomes for children, young individuals, and families while fostering a skilled and compassionate Health Visiting workforce.
Program Details
The successful candidate will enroll in the Postgraduate Diploma Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting) at Robert Gordon's University, starting 14th September 2026. This full-time academic year program combines online postgraduate level 11 courses with supervised clinical practice within the Western Isles. The training position is offered under ANNEX 21 Band 7, with guaranteed substantive employment in Uist and Barra upon program completion.
Salary and Working Conditions
The trainee will receive a Band 7 salary from ANNEX 21 (£52,845–£61,466) plus a Distant Islands Allowance of £1,461. The role requires 36 hours per week and is a fixed-term, 12-month contract commencing 14th September 2026. Annual leave is synchronized with the university academic calendar to satisfy Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) training requirements, suspending normal NHS leave entitlements during the training year.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be registered nurses or midwives with current NMC registration and normally hold honours-level academic qualifications, such as a degree with honours or completed honours-level modules within five years. Candidates lacking formal honours qualification but possessing significant clinical expertise can demonstrate academic capability via an enhanced CV submission. Candidates should exhibit motivation for the Health Visiting role, leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
