This position is for a hands-on data center technician who will support the setup, upkeep, and troubleshooting of server, storage, and network equipment in a secure, high-availability environment. The role includes day-to-day operational support, equipment handling, maintenance, and housekeeping across assigned project sites.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out weekly checks on server and storage hardware to spot faults in equipment or network links, and review IPMI-SEL information plus vendor-specific management logs.
  • Investigate connectivity problems on servers and storage systems, including basic diagnosis of transceiver issues and optical fiber signal strength, using the procedures and tools used in the data center.
  • Use diagnostic findings to coordinate with vendor support teams such as HPE, Dell, and IX by raising support tickets and tracking fixes and investigations.
  • Work with the data center operations team to handle the logistics of break-and-fix activities, including escorting vendor contractors and ensuring work follows operational standards.
  • Manage the logistics of Return Material Authorization (RMA) cases for items like rPDUs, network switches, and field-replaceable units such as PSUs, fan modules, and controller modules.
  • Support hardware installations, moves, additions, and changes.
  • Remove and decommission IT assets including HDDs, SSDs, network equipment, servers, storage devices, and backup devices.
  • Perform routine visual and physical inspections of equipment and the data center facility.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy through record updates and regular cycle counts.
  • Refresh structured cabling and material documentation for new deployments.
  • Monitor capacity needs related to floor space, power, cooling, and patch-panel port availability.
  • Follow incident management and change management procedures.
  • Prepare regular updates and reports on moves, changes, support requests, and related activities, while contributing to continuous improvement efforts.
  • Travel between sites as needed.
  • Handle additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications and requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a bachelor’s degree in IT, business, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • CCNA and CCNP certifications are preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience in an enterprise data center setting, with solid knowledge of data center operating practices.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot and identify server hardware issues from major vendors.
  • Experience resolving Ethernet connectivity issues, including RJ45 copper uplinks and LC/MPO fiber uplinks.
  • Good understanding of data cabling and patching.
  • Well-developed organization and communication skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to act quickly on issues, provide status updates, and escalate when needed.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Willingness to travel 0% to 25%.
  • Basic computer literacy is preferred.
  • Prior field service or data center technician experience is preferred.

Work environment and physical demands

The work setting is a highly secure data center that operates around the clock and requires close attention to detail and strong problem-solving ability. The environment is structured, physically demanding, and may be noisy while maintaining controlled temperatures. The role requires lifting up to 50 lbs, frequent bending and stooping, climbing, and extended periods of walking and standing. Hand tools are also used as part of the job.
