Role Summary

The Sustainability Manager role is a leadership position combining strategy development, stakeholder collaboration, and hands-on implementation. Reporting to the Technical & Development Manager, you will spearhead Winstone Wallboards' sustainability and circular economy initiatives, aiming to achieve impactful environmental and commercial results. Major projects include establishing a plasterboard takeback scheme and influencing key industry participants while supporting Fletcher Building’s climate targets.

Key Duties

• Lead the creation and execution of a plasterboard takeback and product stewardship program across the North Island.
• Forge and maintain robust partnerships with councils, government bodies, industry collaborators, customers, merchants, and waste recovery services.
• Translate sustainability strategies into actionable and quantifiable business objectives.
• Provide comprehensive reports and insights to senior leadership at Winstone Wallboards and assist with Fletcher Building’s broader decarbonisation efforts.
• Discover and develop commercial opportunities that arise from circular economy models, resource reclamation, and waste minimization projects.
• Oversee sustainability certifications, conduct audits, manage reporting systems, and monitor environmental performance metrics.

Candidate Profile

• Possess a relevant tertiary qualification in environmental science, engineering, or a related discipline.
• Have at least five years of professional experience in sustainability, preferably within building materials or construction sectors.
• Demonstrate success managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects from inception through delivery.
• Experience collaborating with councils, regulators, government agencies, and industry partners in New Zealand.
• Well-versed in New Zealand’s environmental, climate change, and waste minimisation regulations and frameworks.
• Knowledgeable about environmental certifications, regulatory compliance, and audit requirements.
• Exhibit strong organizational and delivery skills with excellent communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
• Display sound commercial insight, including competence in business case development, funding strategies, and financial responsibility.
