Role Overview

As a Staff Mobile Engineer for Global Retail, you will influence how customers shop for retail items like apparel, beauty products, electronics, and auto parts across Wolt, DoorDash, and Deliveroo platforms. Retail represents a significant growth avenue, and your mission is to develop the most trustworthy and enjoyable shopping experience on mobile for millions daily.

You will engage in improving and replacing components of existing consumer apps, focusing on specific retail experiences within complex B2C applications managed by various teams. This role demands robust technical judgment to ensure consistent, high-quality, and efficient deliveries across teams. Although primarily iOS centered, experience with Android is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead intricate cross-team projects from design to launch and ongoing operations, collaborating with product, design, and business leaders to achieve measurable results.
• Develop and implement native iOS and Android features within shared consumer apps, balancing rapid delivery, quality, and maintainability.
• Contribute to the advancement of server-driven UI (SDUI) strategies by designing configurable, component-based interfaces beyond simple UI coding.
• Foresee future product and architecture requirements while setting engineering best practices across areas like architecture, testing, release management, monitoring, and incident response, focusing on scalability and reliability.
• Promote AI-powered tools and methodologies that accelerate engineering workflows without compromising quality.
• Effectively communicate complex technical decisions to stakeholders of varying technical backgrounds, providing clear timelines, estimates, and trade-offs for predictable outcomes.
• Mentor engineering team members, including those new to mobile development, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

Candidate Profile

• Extensive expertise in mobile development, especially within the iOS ecosystem, embracing modern standards including performance tuning, observability, modularity, SDK design, server-driven UI approaches, CI/CD, and App Store deployment processes.
• Experience operating at a Staff Engineer level or similar seniority, leading initiatives that span multiple teams or organizational boundaries.
• Demonstrated success working on large-scale native consumer B2C apps where application ownership is divided by teams according to verticals or features.
• Pragmatic and impact-oriented mindset with a preference for actionable and straightforward solutions; adept at navigating uncertainty and driving clarity in dynamic environments.
• Strong ability to influence and align diverse stakeholders through effective communication and technical leadership.
• Track record of mentoring peers and instilling a learning-focused engineering culture.
• Practical use of AI tools within software engineering, with sound judgment in evaluating AI output quality and limitations.
• Familiarity with Android development is considered a valuable plus.

This position is based in one of Wolt’s tech hubs, either Helsinki or Berlin.
