Job Overview
The Senior Telecom Engineer role involves applying advanced expertise and industry best practices to enhance the telecommunications discipline within the company. This position serves as a resource for less experienced colleagues by sharing conceptual insights and hands-on knowledge in telecommunications engineering. The engineer addresses complex technical challenges to improve products and services and plays a key role across customer, operational, project, and service domains while ensuring adherence to company guidelines and policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct conceptual, FEED, studies, and detailed analyses and design according to project specifications, design codes, and telecommunications system standards.
- Utilize knowledge and skills to handle a broad scope of standard and unique technical conditions.
- Develop clear, accurate design calculations, analyses, reports, and procedures.
- Effectively manage time to meet deadlines and budget constraints and plan short-term tasks within own scope.
- Clearly communicate technical issues and work collaboratively to foster understanding.
- Maintain comprehensive awareness of project scope, specifications, schedule, and interdisciplinary requirements; proactively identify and address potential issues.
- Identify scope changes swiftly and initiate change notifications with necessary documentation and estimates.
- Collaborate with various disciplines to develop clash-free and integrated designs.
- Coordinate with other departments for input on discipline-specific designs and drawings.
- Maintain close collaboration with engineering disciplines, planning, fabrication, and project management teams.
- Document significant communications and provide copies to relevant engineering leads and management.
- Support bid proposal efforts by preparing estimates, technical query reviews, execution statements, and manhour forecasts.
- Raise technical queries to clarify work scope and ensure adherence to company standards and procedures.
- Prepare engineering design bases, philosophies, and technical specifications as required.
- Participate in finalizing deliverable lists to ensure compliance with specifications and functional requirements.
- Attend project reviews, vendor and engineering meetings, and offshore site surveys when needed.
- Provide technical oversight and review for designers working on telecommunications products.
- Prepare and review design reports and operating procedures.
- Contribute design inputs to other disciplines to facilitate their deliverables.
- Assist procurement personnel with purchasing equipment, materials, and services ensuring compliance with customer requirements.
- Update weight reports based on vendor information receipt.
- Validate engineering work done by others within the discipline.
- Review vendor and subcontractor submissions for specifications compliance and provide feedback.
- Perform design verifications including single and inter-disciplinary checks.
- Provide technical support for fabrication queries and identify defects or corrective actions needed.
- Keep the Lead Engineer informed on technical, budgetary, and manpower related issues.
- Contribute to planning and progress reports including productivity monitoring.
- Ensure final vendor and subcontractor data manuals are complete and approved.
- Participate in internal, customer, and third-party technical audits of engineering deliverables and vendor documentation.
- Assist Lead Engineer in responding to customers and certifying or auditing bodies.
- Record lessons learned and contribute to the company’s lessons learned system.
- Mentor and guide less experienced engineers on procedures, standards, calculations, requisitions, bid evaluations, and technical queries.
- Monitor cost aspects related to own work and discipline at large.
- Prepare or review telecom system definitions, philosophies, specifications, safety drawings, and system architectures.
- Prepare, update, or review functional design specifications, logic diagrams, cause and effect diagrams (in coordination with Instrumentation Engineering).
- Prepare and review telecom equipment specifications, data sheets, and spare parts lists.
- Contribute inputs to P&ID development especially related to health, safety, and environment processes and markups from vendor data.
- Review telecom equipment testing procedures and attend factory acceptance tests as required.
- Assist in addressing action items from HAZOP meetings if applicable.
- Develop comprehensive knowledge of various telecom-related systems such as FDS, GDS, CCTV, TEL/LAN, Radio Systems, Intercom Systems, Public Address General Alarm Systems, Intrusion Detection, and Access Control Systems.
Qualifications and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Instrumentation Engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
- Between 8 and 15 years experience in oil and gas, primarily with major contractors or consultants performing detailed design engineering.
- Thorough understanding of design methodologies, analysis techniques, and relevant standards, codes, and guidelines.
- Membership in professional engineering organizations or registration as a Professional Engineer is preferred.
- Knowledge of Functional Safety concepts including hardware/software design per IEC 61508, functional safety analysis, design, and operation according to IEC 61511.
