Position Overview

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the mechanical engineering efforts at the heart of the ZURU House, a fully integrated modular prefabricated housing solution. This role involves the ownership and development of product designs across New Zealand, Los Angeles, China, and Italy, managing everything from initial concepts to ensuring compliance with standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical component design for the ZURU House using SolidWorks, spanning structural, MEP, and facade categories.
• Steer the entire design process from concept creation to preparing manufacturing-ready documents.
• Construct and evaluate in-house prototypes, documenting outcomes and iterating designs for continuous improvement.
• Manage multiple testing cycles to advance design quality.
• Analyze how modifications affect related sections of the building system and coordinate with other product owners to address dependencies proactively.
• Ensure adherence to relevant building codes and standards early in the design phase by collaborating closely with compliance experts.
• Engage with international teams across manufacturing, industrial design, engineering, and software development to synchronize design goals and schedules.
• Tackle manufacturing challenges, ensuring smooth product integration within the full housing system, advancing products from testing to production with minimal oversight.
• Maintain thorough technical documentation, including design specifications, test results, and revisions, with clarity tailored for engineering professionals.

Expected Impact

• Within the first 3 to 6 months, assume responsibility for specific products in the system, develop insights on inter-product design impacts, and establish direct collaboration with global cross-functional leaders. Initial designs should be ready for small-scale testing.
• After 12 months, attain full technical and compliance ownership of designated products, overseeing all phases from manufacturing to installation, backed by multiple testing iterations and autonomous leadership of cross-functional deliveries.

Skills & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in mechanical product development within any industry.
• Expertise in SolidWorks to create detailed, production-ready 3D designs independently.
• Demonstrated success across the product lifecycle from concept development through validated manufacturing solutions.
• Knowledge of product compliance and building or technical standards is advantageous but not mandatory.
