Security Analyst

About the Position

Systematix is recruiting a Security Analyst to support cybersecurity initiatives for higher education institutions across Ontario, working directly with universities and colleges. This role focuses primarily on monitoring network security controls and managing alerts to identify and remediate threats. The Security Analyst will also handle member onboarding, produce activity reports, fine-tune alert systems, and maintain related infrastructure and ticketing processes.

Core Responsibilities

• Monitor and analyze Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks affecting enterprise and public-facing networks.
• Manage and maintain DDoS mitigation tools including health checks, tuning parameters, software updates, and appliance administration.
• Investigate anomalies such as volumetric, application-layer, and traffic flood attacks utilizing Arbor DDoS appliances.
• Create and adjust DDoS detection rules, alert thresholds, and automated mitigation workflows.
• Perform analysis of traffic to detect patterns indicating botnets, spoofed traffic, and other attack vectors in real time.
• Coordinate active response efforts with ISPs, content delivery networks, cloud security providers, and internal teams during incidents.
• Lead incident response activities including triage, containment, recovery, and providing post-incident analysis.
• Communicate incidents clearly and proactively while documenting actions and follow-up requirements.
• Develop and maintain DDoS attack response guides, operational procedures, escalation protocols, and technical documentation.
• Produce security incident reports detailing attack trends, effectiveness of mitigations, and residual risks.
• Conduct proactive threat hunting for emerging DDoS techniques and related attack campaigns.
• Optimize monitoring tools to reduce false positives and better detect malicious activity.
• Collaborate with SOC, Network Operations, Infrastructure, and Cloud teams to strengthen defenses against availability attacks.
• Participate in architecture reviews to improve DDoS protection and network resilience.
• Ensure compliance of security monitoring systems with internal standards, including patching and meeting service level agreements.

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Strong communication abilities coupled with solid organizational skills.
• Understanding of cybersecurity monitoring practices and Security Operations Center (SOC) workflows.
• Experience working with Netscout and Arbor DDoS protection systems.
• Proficiency in TCP/IP networking including routing, switching, NetFlow, BGP, and firewall technologies.
• Familiarity with IT security frameworks such as NIST, CSF, or ISO27001.
• Basic knowledge of enterprise server platforms, virtualization, and performance monitoring.
• Relevant combination of formal education, certifications, and practical experience will be considered.

Additional Details

• Position is a 6-month contract with an option to convert to permanent employment.
• Work location is hybrid with flexible arrangements within Ontario, Canada.
• Standard workweek is 37.5 hours.

Compensation

The typical pay range for this role is approximately $50 to $55 per hour, with actual salary contingent on experience and skills.
