Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement risk modelling frameworks, workflows for data integration, and machine learning pipelines to convert complex hazard and climate datasets into practical insights.
• Work closely with risk scientists, hazard/climate specialists, stakeholders, and partners to co-develop risk solutions that inform resilience planning across New Zealand.
• Support the growth of data science and risk modelling capabilities within the organisation by providing mentorship and conducting workshops.

Candidate Profile

• A graduate or undergraduate qualification relevant to the field, along with up to five years’ experience in risk modelling, data science, or natural hazard applied science.
• Strong understanding of risk modelling principles and the application of mathematical and statistical methods to risk analysis.
• Competence in data science techniques including big data handling, statistical analysis, machine learning, data visualisation, and cloud computing applied to risk modelling scenarios.
• Familiarity with natural hazard sciences such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, landslides, flooding, and climate event scenarios.
• Proven expertise in Python programming and command line usage, along with experience in other programming languages.
• Experience processing, analysing, and visualising geospatial information using GIS tools such as QGIS and ArcGIS, with solid database management skills supporting risk modelling applications.
