Job Overview
The Residential Worker will operate in accordance with organizational policies and contribute as part of a house staff team supporting residents and facility needs. The role requires ensuring resident compliance with parole and house regulations, managing documentation, maintaining confidentiality, and fostering a respectful, trust-based environment. This position necessitates understanding and respecting the organizational hierarchy and participating actively in evaluations and staff meetings.
Key Responsibilities
- Thorough knowledge and adherence to the Operations Manual (Policies & Procedures).
- Uphold the mission statement and code of ethics of The Salvation Army.
- Ensure residents comply with parole conditions and house rules.
- Maintain adequate supplies of forms and manage their availability in the Duty Office, including photocopy tasks.
- Engage in regular performance reviews with the Director and attend all team meetings.
- Work collaboratively with house staff focused on resident and facility needs.
- Respect the established chain of command.
- Protect the privacy and confidentiality of both residents and staff members.
- Create and maintain an environment of trust and respect while exercising necessary control.
- Understand roles and responsibilities of various positions and perform cross-tasking when required.
- Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before shift start for seamless shift changes.
- Conduct comprehensive house rounds ensuring cleanliness, security, and accurate resident headcount logged against the logbook documentation.
- Confirm all doors are properly locked post-checks.
- Review new logbook entries or important reports with outgoing staff for proper follow-up.
- Maintain alertness throughout the shift.
- Monitor the Sign-Out Log to verify resident names and locations upon sign-outs and call-ins.
- Administer medications and log administrations carefully.
- Complete supervisor checklists accurately.
- Ensure security for residents and the facility at all times.
- Carry the portable phone and panic button throughout the shift for safety.
- Manage intake procedures for new residents and discharge processes for those leaving.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Director or Program Coordinator.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Must be eligible for Canadian Reliability Status for the entire length of employment.
- Proficiency with computers is required.
- Preference given to candidates with related work experience and/or post-secondary education.
- Strong oral and written communication capabilities.
- Skilled conflict resolution and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Competencies
- Insight into offender behavioral patterns and capability to assess risks and needs.
- Understanding of authority usage in supervision and effective crisis intervention techniques.
- Tolerance and empathy towards people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to develop counseling relationships, build trust, and assist offenders in practical reintegration challenges.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
- Cultural competence and respect for diversity.
- Willingness and ability to complete required background screening including the Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
Working Hours
This position requires a commitment of 48 hours per week.
Compensation
The expected salary range is $18.30 to $22.87 per hour, with a maximum of $27.44 per hour, depending on qualifications, experience, and market factors.
