About the Role
The Environmental Chemistry and Biomarker Discovery Program within Algoma University's Department of Biology is looking for a driven Research Associate to join an interdisciplinary research project. This initiative focuses on untargeted metabolomics, diagnosing eutrophication, studying cyanobacterial metabolite chemistry, and leveraging AI for environmental data analysis. The successful candidate will utilize sophisticated analytical instruments such as LC-QTOF and LC-MS/MS, work with digital data pipelines, and develop organism–metabolite models to identify markers indicative of changes in freshwater ecosystems. Collaboration will be closely maintained with Environment and Climate Change Canada's Centre of Inland Waters and the International Institute for Sustainable Development's Experimental Lakes Area.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and extract samples for analysis.
- Operate advanced instrumentation including LC–QTOF and LC–MS/MS for both untargeted and targeted chemical analysis.
- Conduct data collection, annotation, and perform complex multivariate data analyses.
- Keep detailed laboratory records and manage data systems meticulously.
Candidate Requirements
- Possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science or a closely related discipline.
- Have experience with analytical chemistry techniques such as LC–MS and LC-MS/MS.
- Be new to the workforce, changing careers, or currently unemployed/underemployed seeking entry into a new field.
- Must not have previously engaged in a NOHFC-funded internship.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Reside in or be willing to relocate to Northern Ontario for the internship duration.
- Have legal authorization to work in Canada.
Terms and Conditions
This is a full-time position consisting of 35 working hours per week over a 52-week period, corresponding to a NOHFC internship. The salary for this role is $39,002.60 plus applicable MERCs. The start date is flexible and can be negotiated. Applications are accepted until September 30, 2026.
