Overview

The Serious Incident Investigation Unit (SIIU) within Resource Safety & Health Queensland (RSHQ) is seeking experienced Principal Investigators for two positions: a permanent role in Mackay and a temporary two-year appointment in Brisbane (from late September 2026 to late September 2028). The SIIU oversees investigations into safety incidents affecting mining, quarrying, explosives, and petroleum and gas sectors.

Key Duties

• Attend serious incident sites and lead complex investigations.
• Obtain witness statements and conduct both voluntary and compulsory interviews.
• Gather evidence from incident scenes and compile comprehensive briefs for criminal, civil, and administrative proceedings.
• Present evidence in Magistrates, District, and Coroners Courts.
• Collaborate closely with RSHQ inspectorates, in-house legal teams, and the Office of the Work Health and Safety Prosecutor throughout investigations and prosecutions.

Additional Information

• Travel to remote and challenging locations across Queensland is required, with potential for extended periods away from base.
• Flexible work arrangements allow a combination of office-based and remote work when not traveling.
• On-call allowance is provided for out-of-hours duties.

• Both positions involve engagement as part of a collaborative statewide team of investigators.
• Mackay role is permanent with five weeks of annual recreational leave; Brisbane role is temporary for two years.
