Job description

Overview

The Royal British Legion is seeking a Portfolio Assurance Manager to join its Change and Transformation team during an exciting new phase for the organisation. This role supports the Customer, Technology and Change directorate, which includes Technology, Data Protection, Business Planning, and Change & Transformation divisions. This opportunity aligns with driving a new 10-year strategy aimed at supporting the Armed Forces community both now and into the future.

Role Purpose

Positioned within the Change & Transformation team, the Portfolio Assurance Manager will deliver independent, risk-based assurance across the entire project portfolio. The role ensures projects are positioned for success by aiding informed decision-making based on solid evidence and practical delivery realities. Close collaboration with project teams, sponsors, and change leaders is essential to strengthen confidence in strategic project delivery through early engagement, sound advice, and constructive challenge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide impartial assurance on projects, business cases, and critical decisions.
  • Engage early with project teams to clarify assurance demands.
  • Evaluate project governance, controls, risks, dependencies, and delivery plans to gauge delivery confidence.
  • Offer clear conclusions, recommendations, and actionable insights.
  • Assess the validity of benefits, assumptions related to delivery, resource allocations, and financial data.
  • Contribute to the ongoing enhancement of assurance methodologies, standards, and practices across the organisation.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will bring experience from project management, portfolio management, PMO, assurance, governance, or risk environments and be confident in providing constructive criticism while maintaining positive stakeholder relations. Strong analytical skills to review evidence and assess risk in complex change settings are required.

Working Arrangements

This role is primarily remote, with the successful candidate working from their home address and attending occasional travel commitments including monthly team meetings.

Employee Benefits

  • 28 days paid holiday plus bank holidays, with increases based on length of service and an optional scheme to purchase up to 5 additional leave days.
  • Enhanced paid maternity, paternity, and adoption leave.
  • Generous pension scheme with employer contributions between 6% and 14%, dependent on tenure.
  • Flexible working options depending on role requirements.
  • Employee Assistance Programme offering confidential counseling, financial, and legal advice.
  • Access to development courses led by learning specialists.
  • Volunteer opportunities.
  • Additional benefits including travel loans and Cycle to Work schemes.

Diversity and Inclusion

The Royal British Legion is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace reflective of the armed forces community and broader society. Applications are welcomed from candidates of all backgrounds. Interview support schemes for applicants with Armed Forces connections or disabilities are available, provided the essential criteria are met.

Interview Information

Interviews are scheduled for the week commencing 7th September. The vacancy may close early if sufficient strong applications are received, so early applications are encouraged.
