Job description

Position Summary

The Mason plays a key role in conducting extensive masonry, paving, and structural repairs at Koidu Government Hospital (KGH) and the Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE) in Sierra Leone. Working primarily at KGH but occasionally at other Partners In Health (PIH) Sierra Leone sites as required, the Mason ensures that all masonry tasks meet safety and hygiene standards crucial for healthcare environments. Reporting to the Head of Maintenance, the incumbent supports structural maintenance, new construction, renovations, and finishing work vital for hospital facility operations and safety.

Core Responsibilities

  • Undertake repairs and renovations of deteriorated walls, foundations, and floors within the hospital buildings.
  • Carry out paving projects including concrete or interlocking tile laying on outdoor paths, ramps, walkways, and drainage control structures.
  • Restore and reconstruct brickwork, plaster, and concrete finishes in wards, corridors, and utility sections.
  • Conduct patch maintenance on sanitary facility walls such as in toilets, bathrooms, and drainage systems.
  • Perform new masonry installations including block laying, structural reinforcements, and room modifications for expansion or demarcation.
  • Provide quality finishing work involving plastering, screeding, tile fixing, and concrete casting for extensions and installations.
  • Ensure mortar and concrete mixes comply with specified ratios and construction standards.
  • Assist in final leveling, rendering, and alignment to achieve both functional and aesthetic outcomes.
  • Adhere strictly to architectural and engineering plans during construction and repairs.
  • Implement correct curing processes for concrete and plaster to prevent cracking or damage.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety compliance at job sites, especially in patient care zones.
  • Conduct regular inspections of hospital buildings to verify structural soundness and safety.
  • Promptly address urgent repairs in wards, operating rooms, offices, and other hospital areas.
  • Estimate and request required construction materials such as cement, sand, chippings, and laterite.
  • Coordinate effectively with hospital maintenance, operations, environmental services teams, and external contractors as needed.
  • Use appropriate protective gear and follow occupational health and safety procedures.
  • Perform any additional tasks assigned by the line manager falling within the scope of the role.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Possess 3 to 5 years of practical experience in masonry and construction tasks.
  • Experienced in both renovating existing buildings and constructing new facilities.
  • Proficient in bricklaying, plastering, concrete mixing, tile and block work, and paving execution.
  • Skills in painting or tiling are advantageous.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic building blueprints and sketches.
  • Committed to delivering precise, high-quality finishes and level surface work.
  • Experience within hospital environments is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Adaptable to diverse and changing construction conditions.
  • Strong teamwork skills, with responsiveness to supervision and proactive maintenance identification.
