Position Overview

The City of Mission Viejo is inviting applications for the part-time role of Library Specialist at the Mission Viejo Library. The position entails delivering exceptional service to library patrons by helping them effectively navigate library resources, including both traditional and digital materials. This role involves assisting visitors at service desks, public computers, and catalog terminals, as well as supporting public outreach events.

Work Schedule and Hours

There are two vacancies with distinct schedules:

  • Position 1: Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Position 2: Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Thursday 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Schedules may vary to cover coworker absences or programming needs. Typical library hours are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m.–9 p.m., Friday 1–5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday 12–5 p.m.

Employment Details

This is an at-will, hourly, seasonal, or temporary role averaging 12 to 19 weekly hours, not exceeding 1,000 hours annually, with overtime applicable for over 40 hours per week. The position is non-exempt under FLSA.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrates excellent public customer service skills, inclusive of youth and teens.
  • Experienced in assisting with library programming and events.
  • Paying close attention to detail, working efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Effectively prioritizes workload and manages time/resources.
  • Proficient with computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Integrated Library Systems (e.g., SirsiDynix Symphony), with the ability to learn new software.
  • Strong oral and written communication capabilities.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Automated library circulation systems and library industry terminology.
  • Public library service principles and programs.
  • Library classification, cataloging, and bibliographic processes.
  • Effective public relations and customer service approaches.
  • Office technology and procedures including data collection and report generation.
  • Business correspondence standards and English language mechanics.
  • Basic principles of risk management and safe work practices.
  • Safe vehicle operation for occasional library-related duties.

Abilities

  • Conduct diverse library tasks accurately with minimal oversight.
  • Access, enter, and update information on computer workstations.
  • Organize projects, schedule work, and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Understand and apply relevant laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Maintain records and prepare routine reports.

  • Supervise and train assigned staff when necessary.

  • Use office equipment including computers, copiers, printers, software, and cash registers.

Education and Experience Requirements

Completion of 12th grade with supplementary college coursework in areas such as Library Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities, Liberal Arts, Business, or related fields, along with at least 3 years of clerical experience in library settings.
