Role overview
Join a respected, award-recognised team at Suncorp Group in Auckland and contribute to an organisation that supports New Zealanders and helps protect what matters most to them. This opportunity sits within a period of major change for the insurance sector, shaped by climate-related events, evolving regulation, and broader social and environmental challenges.
This is a 12-month fixed-term contract created to cover parental leave. The position suits a lawyer who can provide practical corporate and regulatory advice and help shape the business through transformation and compliance change.
You will be part of an experienced in-house legal function and report to the Manager, Corporate Advisory. The role supports stakeholders across Suncorp Group New Zealand, including the general insurance brand Vero. The work covers a range of advisory areas such as technology, regulatory matters, investigations, procurement, and marketing/sponsorship. Experience in advisory, regulatory, and litigation work will be valued, especially where it adds commercial impact and aligns with the organisation’s strategic direction.
What the role involves
You will work closely with teams across the business and provide legal guidance that is clear, practical, and commercially grounded. The team values independence, strong learning ability, and the confidence to operate with a degree of autonomy while still being supported by capable and high-performing colleagues.
Candidate profile
We are looking for a lawyer with strong advisory capability, good judgement, and the ability to turn complex legal issues into straightforward advice for non-legal stakeholders.
Additional information
Suncorp Group emphasises a supportive culture, flexible ways of working, and opportunities for career growth. The organisation is committed to diversity, inclusion, accessibility, internal mobility, and building strong relationships across its people and customers. If you need adjustments or support during recruitment or in the workplace, you can request a confidential discussion with the contact provided in the source listing.
To be considered, you should have the right professional qualifications and relevant post-admission experience, along with a commercial mindset and the ability to work directly with senior leaders.
Requirements
- A Bachelor of Laws degree and a current practising certificate
- Admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in New Zealand
- At least 5 years of relevant legal experience gained in a reputable law firm or in-house legal environment
- Preferred background in regulatory advisory work, either in a corporate setting or litigation context
- Strong understanding of legal issues within financial services is an advantage
- Experience with technology-related contracts is desirable
- Commercial awareness and the confidence to work independently, including with senior leadership
- Ability to explain complex legal matters in a simple and practical way for business stakeholders
Employment terms
This is a fixed-term role lasting 12 months and is intended to cover parental leave.
Equal opportunity and support
