About the Department

The New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) is among the oldest law enforcement bodies in the U.S., dedicated to fighting municipal corruption. It operates as an independent and impartial overseer for New York City government, including its agencies, employees, contractors, and recipients of City funds.

Role Overview

We are searching for an entry-level Investigator to join the Background Investigation Unit (BIU). This role is critical to maintaining the integrity of the City’s leadership by investigating candidates for key public trust positions, including executive management, those with financial responsibilities, digital security access, and legal or investigative roles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform in-depth and sensitive investigations of individuals proposed for City appointments that require a high level of public trust.
  • Assess, verify, and authenticate data from various sources including but not limited to financial and employment records, criminal histories, educational qualifications, and publicly available information.
  • Draft clear, objective investigative reports to aid City agencies in their employment and promotion decisions.
  • Manage and complete a substantial number of time-sensitive cases within a collaborative team environment.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills and sound judgment to assess findings, address inconsistencies, and compile accurate results.

Background and Compliance Checks

Candidates selected for this position will undergo fingerprinting and a background check. For roles involving law enforcement or investigative functions, a consumer credit review will also be conducted following NYC Administrative Code guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) and at least four years of full-time experience in investigation, auditing, law enforcement, security, inspection, or a significant operational role within a governmental or industrial agency; or
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exceptional writing skills to produce well-structured, concise investigative documentation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal capabilities, with the skill to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  • Keen attention to detail while managing numerous urgent investigations.
  • Professionalism and discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information.
  • Experience in investigative fields, such as law enforcement, legal, academic, or journalism.

Residency and Benefits

New York City residency is typically required within 90 days of hire; however, certain employees with two continuous years of service may be eligible to live in surrounding counties. Employees might qualify for federal loan forgiveness and state repayment assistance programs.

Equal Employment Opportunity

The City of New York is an equal opportunity employer, committed to fostering a diverse workforce and a workplace free of discrimination and harassment based on legally protected characteristics.

Salary

Salary range: $52,426 to $56,536 annually.
