About the Role
We are looking for a skilled Information Governance Lead to create and direct the information governance function at Ko Taku Reo. This permanent, full-time position reports to the Head of Digital and IT and is primarily located in Christchurch with the option of Auckland for the right candidate. This role presents a unique chance to develop an information governance capability from the ground up, as the organisation currently lacks a mature Information Governance Framework and Enterprise Document and Records Management System (EDRMS).
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will develop strategy, frameworks, processes, and systems to manage information efficiently across the organisation. Key activities include collaborating with Digital & IT teams, business leaders, and staff nationwide to embed best practices, ensuring compliance with New Zealand laws, and enabling staff to confidently handle organisational information. The role involves both strategic planning and practical delivery — from designing governance policies to mapping business processes, configuring information systems, managing projects, and facilitating organizational change.
Requirements
Candidates must have a Level 7 or higher tertiary qualification in Information Management, Records Management, Library Sciences, Information Systems, or a related area. Importantly, candidates should demonstrate experience in founding or greatly transforming an Information Governance function rather than merely maintaining one. Additional expectations include experience in leading EDRMS implementations, crafting governance frameworks, designing information architecture and workflows, understanding New Zealand regulatory requirements, and proficient knowledge of Microsoft 365 governance tools.
Skills and Experience
- Experience in gathering requirements, selecting vendors, implementing, and encouraging adoption of EDRMS.
- Development of Information Governance strategies, policies, and operational models.
- Designing metadata standards, classification schemes, retention schedules, and information workflows.
- Business process analysis and redesign to enhance governance outcomes.
- Expertise in Microsoft 365 capabilities including SharePoint, Teams, and Purview.
- Management of hybrid records (both paper-based and digital).
- Knowledge of legislation such as the Public Records Act 2005, Privacy Act 2020, and Archives NZ standards.
- Proven leadership in managing change, stakeholder engagement, and training across diverse teams.
- Strong project management, planning, and analytical skills with the ability to implement strategy practically.
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills with ability to influence all levels of the organisation.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).
Why This Role Stands Out
This position goes beyond traditional records management—offering the chance to build a lasting information governance structure that will support Ko Taku Reo over the long term. You will influence how information is created, handled, protected, and shared across a national platform while introducing cutting-edge digital management methods and technologies.
Application Details
If you thrive on creating order from chaos, driving impactful organisational changes, and leaving a lasting mark, we encourage you to apply. Submit your CV and a cover letter detailing your relevant experience and interest in this role. Applications are reviewed on submission, and only those legally eligible to work in New Zealand will be considered. The closing date for applications is 5pm, Wednesday, 5 August 2026.
