Financial Controller

Role overview

The Financial Controller is a senior leadership position focused on directing an organization’s finance function. The role centers on financial reporting, planning, compliance, and internal governance to support stability and sustainable growth.

Financial planning and analysis

• Own the budgeting, forecasting, and wider financial planning cycle for the business.
• Review financial performance, key metrics, and trends to generate useful insights for management decisions.

Financial reporting

• Produce accurate and timely financial statements such as profit and loss reports, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
• Maintain alignment with accounting standards, regulatory obligations, and internal company policies.
• Share financial results and commentary with leadership, stakeholders, and external auditors.

Budgeting and cost control

• Prepare annual budgets and track actual performance against approved targets.
• Introduce cost-saving measures and operational improvements to support financial objectives.
• Investigate budget variances and implement corrective actions where needed.

Internal controls and compliance

• Design and maintain internal controls that protect company assets and improve accuracy.
• Ensure adherence to financial regulations, tax requirements, and internal policies.
• Work closely with internal and external auditors during audits and review processes.

Cash and treasury management

• Manage cash flow and liquidity to support working capital needs and on-time payments to vendors and creditors.
• Oversee banking relationships and treasury activities to improve returns on surplus funds.

Financial systems and technology

• Implement and support finance systems and software that improve process efficiency and reporting quality.
• Keep up with new technology and recommend upgrades to existing financial tools and systems.

Team leadership and development

• Lead, guide, and supervise the finance team.
• Build a culture of ownership, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the department.
• Coach and develop finance team members to strengthen performance and capability.

Strategic support

• Contribute financial input to strategic planning and business direction.
• Assess the financial feasibility of projects, investments, and acquisitions.
• Evaluate the impact of business decisions and proposed strategies on the company’s finances.

Taxation and compliance

• Coordinate tax planning and compliance work, including accurate and timely tax filings.
• Help optimize the organization’s tax position while staying within legal requirements.

Business partnering

• Provide financial analysis, interpret trends, and deliver actionable recommendations to support operational and strategic initiatives.
• Collaborate with other departments to offer financial expertise for projects and business decisions.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline is required; a master’s degree or CPA is an added advantage.
• Substantial finance or accounting experience with increasing leadership responsibility.
• Solid knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and compliance standards.
• Hands-on proficiency with financial software and ERP platforms.
• Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
• Capacity to think strategically and make sound financial judgments that support business success.
