Position Overview

The Department of Customer Services, Division of Motor Vehicles in Honolulu is recruiting for five Driver License Examiner I roles at various licensing centers across O'ahu. These positions involve administering written, visual, and road performance tests to assess eligibility for driver license categories 1 through 3.

Key Duties

  • Evaluate applicant eligibility by administering written and oral driving exams, recording outcomes, and informing candidates of results.
  • Conduct vision screenings applying established standards to determine physical fitness for driving.
  • Inspect test vehicles, guide applicants through the road test, observe driving skills, and decide pass/fail status based on safety and legal standards.
  • Issue licenses and permits by verifying identity, administering oaths, collecting fingerprints and fees, and validating out-of-state licenses.

Eligibility and Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident alien, or a non-citizen authorized for unrestricted federal employment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Substitution of responsible work experience demonstrating job capabilities is acceptable.
  • Minimum two years of supervisory, driver instruction, regulatory, or related experience, including at least one year of substantial public interaction involving rule explanations and eligibility determinations.
  • Must operate various vehicle types safely during road tests and identify hazards effectively.
  • Evaluate driving performance accurately and respond calmly to emergency situations.
  • Apply and communicate motor vehicle laws and safety regulations clearly.
  • Possess a valid Type 3 driver's license at application and maintain it during employment.
  • Maintain a clean driving record with no moving violations for the previous three years, verified by a certified traffic abstract from the District Courts.

Verification and Documentation

Applicants must submit a copy of their valid driver's license with their application or mail it to the Department of Human Resources by the recruitment deadline. A certified traffic abstract is also required at interview to confirm a good driving record. All submitted documents must be legible; copies will not be returned.
