Overview

The Transportation Planning and Management Division is dedicated to ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable movement for people and goods throughout New York City. Within this division, the Research, Implementation, and Safety (RIS) unit works to achieve Vision Zero goals aimed at eliminating severe injuries and fatalities caused by traffic incidents.

We are seeking a Data Scientist to join the Data Operations, Systems, and Analytics team within RIS. This team provides essential data expertise to enable effective data analytics, create data products, and generate insights that underpin the agency's data-driven strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute research and analytic studies focused on transportation safety to shape current and future policies, planning, and programs.
  • Deliver data analyses and products for senior leadership to support Vision Zero and Bus Priority initiatives.
  • Collaborate with and supervise colleagues in conducting research and sharing data findings with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Perform data exploration and analysis, maintain critical databases, and deliver ad-hoc analytical support.
  • Develop predictive machine learning models for transportation safety and operational insights.
  • Create new data products responsive to evolving needs, enhancing agency-wide data-informed decision making.
  • Support data management and analytical requirements related to the Bus Action Plan.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in physical, biological, environmental, social science, or public health is required; advanced degrees preferred along with substantial research experience.
  • Strong interest or background in urban planning and policy geared toward safer and sustainable city development.
  • Proficient with handling large datasets using SQL, GIS tools, and Python or similar programming languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce compelling analyses and visual data representations.
  • Proven experience conducting both quantitative and geospatial research methodologies.
  • Excellent organizational skills coupled with a self-directed work approach and strong communication capabilities.

Additional Information

  • Location: 55 Water Street, New York, NY 10041
  • Work hours: 35 hours per week, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Remote work: Eligible for up to 2 days remote work per week as per the City’s Remote Work Pilot Program
  • New hires must live in New York City for the first two years of employment.
  • This position is subject to a one-year probationary period and requires compliance with NYC residency mandates.
