Position Synopsis

Working under the Chief of Data and Operations, the Data and Systems Analyst will gain comprehensive knowledge of New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) data infrastructure. The role involves conducting detailed data analyses and research to aid the Office of Auditor General (OAG) in pinpointing potential audit targets and facilitating collaboration across NYCPS departments.

Core Duties

  • Collaborate with OAG Audit Directors to define audit procedures that focus on critical risks, controls, and audit objectives.
  • Enhance NYCPS’s internal control frameworks in partnership with OAG colleagues.
  • Recommend system controls and strategies to improve data accuracy and integrity in NYCPS records.
  • Work closely with database developers to assess and suggest improvements to existing systems and workflows.

  • Create complex stored procedures, triggers, and analytics queries on sizeable datasets; leverage Cognos and other reporting tools to extract data.

  • Stay current with professional development opportunities and maintain relevant knowledge via workshops, publications, and networking.

  • Advance OAG’s move toward proactive auditing by crafting analytical methods to detect trends, anomalies, and emerging risks within NYCPS data systems.
  • Integrate data-driven research into audit processes, internal control evaluations, and risk-focused audit planning by collaborating with audit teams.
  • Investigate opportunities to adopt automation and novel technologies including AI tools to elevate analytic and auditing processes.
  • Contribute to bolstering data governance and elevating data quality standards both within OAG analytics and NYCPS’s broader internal controls.

Qualifications

  • Minimum: PhD in relevant science field with at least one year of full-time administrative, supervisory, or research experience; or Master's degree in a related field plus three years of full-time responsible research experience; or equivalent education and experience that meets or exceeds these criteria, including a minimum of a Master’s degree and at least two years of applicable experience as described.
  • Additional Experience: Candidates must also possess two extra years of pertinent professional experience beyond the minimum educational and experience requirements.
  • Preferred: Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities; proficient in handling large data sets; skilled with SQL programming, SQL Server, and Cognos reporting tools; strong expertise in data mining, visualization, and facilitating process improvements; acquainted with operating systems and database management tasks including security; knowledge of Visual Basic for Applications; understanding of NYCPS information security policies; keen attention to detail and effective communication and presentation skills; dependable, ethical, and a team player with leadership orientation; interest in leveraging automation, AI, and machine learning to enhance audit and analytics workflows.
