Job Overview

The role involves the sterilization of reusable medical instruments and management of biohazard materials within a tightly controlled environment. Vigilance to manufacturer guidelines and sterilization protocols is critical to ensuring the safety and efficacy of medical tools.

  • Identify instruments requiring re-sterilization and reuse according to manufacturer instructions and adhere strictly to tracking procedures.
  • Verify proper functioning of sterilizing equipment, including correct time and temperature settings and correct biological indicators.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety within the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) and utilize appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Apply standard safety measures when working with biohazards, steam, and gases to avoid harm to self and others.

Operational Procedures in CSSD

  • Inspect all instrument trays received in the decontamination area for cleanliness and integrity.
  • Employ evidence-based knowledge to uphold sterilization standards throughout the process.
  • Flush away visible dirt and microorganisms and eliminate any potential microorganism breeding grounds.
  • Keep accurate and detailed monitoring records.
  • Perform proper chemical, dry, and wet heat disinfection or decontamination.
  • Validate sterilization effectiveness using physical, chemical, and biological quality controls during steam or plasma sterilization methods, ensuring compliance with performance and safety standards.
  • Ensure instruments remain sterile up to their point of use by maintaining packaging integrity.

Quality Assurance

  • Assemble instrument sets and procedure trays, selecting suitable packaging materials for processing.
  • Ensure instruments and equipment can move freely during packaging.
  • Collect soiled instruments safely and transport them in appropriate containers to the CSSD for reprocessing.
  • Use correctly sized packaging materials to protect each tray or single instrument.
  • Recognize that thorough cleaning is the most crucial step to remove debris and prevent contamination.

Occupational Health, Safety, and Infection Control

  • Follow strict infection prevention protocols to minimize healthcare-associated infections.
  • Identify safety risks and report any defective or damaged equipment as well as environmental hazards.
  • Immediately report any incidents or injuries occurring on the job.

  • Provide guidance and orientation to new staff as a preceptor.

Quality Improvement and Compliance

  • Comply with organizational policies, protocols, and best practice standards.
  • Participate actively in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety and care quality.
  • Assist the unit’s Head Nurse by taking on additional responsibilities as needed.
