Job description
Role Overview
As a Cook in the Canadian Armed Forces, you will be responsible for preparing nutritious meals for military personnel and National Defence staff. Duties include preparing a range of meals from casual cafeteria-style offerings to formal multi-course dinners for military and civilian dignitaries. You will manage the handling and inventory of food and non-food supplies and ensure strict adherence to workplace health and safety protocols. Additionally, you will accommodate specific religious and spiritual dietary needs, maintain high food safety standards, and operate, clean, and upkeep food service equipment and facilities.
Work Environment
Cooks operate in diverse environments throughout Canada as well as during overseas deployments. Many serve at bases and wings, while others support land-based units or serve aboard ships and submarines. Regular Force members are assigned to bases following training and should expect relocations during their careers, whereas Primary Reserve Force members typically serve part-time at a local reserve unit without compulsory moves, usually working one night per week and some weekends with opportunities for full-time service.
Entry and Training Options
Applicants can enter directly or through paid education programs. Minimum educational requirements include completion of provincial Grade 10 or equivalent, including workplace mathematics. Candidates with culinary or food services diplomas may receive advanced placement in training. Foreign qualifications might be considered.
The Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Plan (NCMSTEP) supports recruits financially while they complete approved Canadian college diploma programs, including benefits such as full salary, medical/dental care, and vacation leave in exchange for a service commitment.
Training starts with Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, focusing on physical fitness and foundational skills. Culinary training occurs at the Canadian Forces Logistics Training Center, combining theory and hands-on practice covering cooking terminology, measurement conversions, baking, bulk cooking, safety, and equipment maintenance.
Specialty training options include instructional techniques, Red Seal certification, submarine culinary service, flight steward responsibilities, food and beverage management certification, and national food safety training.
Part-Time Opportunities
The position is available in a part-time capacity within the Army, Navy, and Air Force in select locations. Reservists participate in training regularly while managing civilian jobs or education, receiving pay for training and benefits without mandatory relocations, though voluntary moves and missions are possible. They train equivalently to Regular Force personnel and may qualify for pension contributions.
