About StartOut
StartOut is a national nonprofit dedicated to advancing scalable LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs. Its purpose is to open up opportunity and improve outcomes for LGBTQ+ founders, with a long-term vision of a business landscape where every entrepreneur can compete on equal footing.
Established in 2009, StartOut has grown into a worldwide network of more than 18,000 members operating at the intersection of entrepreneurship and the LGBTQ+ and ally community. Its programs and events are designed to provide the resources, connections, and support that LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs need to grow their ventures. The organization notes that, out of $2.1T in venture funding to U.S. start-ups, less than 0.5% has gone to openly LGBTQ+ founders, and it aims to help correct that imbalance through its ecosystem.
StartOut’s offerings include Founder’s Program, StartOut Growth Lab, StartOut Spark Lab, StartOut Con, StartOut Awards, Demo Day, Mentorship Program, Investor Portal & Access to Capital Program, education workshops, and around 100 virtual and in-person events each year across the country.
The organization is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, both internally and across the broader LGBTQ+ and entrepreneurial communities. It follows inclusive hiring practices and expects conduct aligned with its Code of Conduct. StartOut is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes candidates of all races, creeds, colors, ethnicities, national origins, religions, sexes, sexual orientations, genders, gender identities, gender expressions, ages, neurotypes, physical or mental abilities, veteran statuses, military obligations, and marital statuses.
About the Role
In this 6-month fixed-term contractor role, you will oversee the systems and relationships that support StartOut’s regional and virtual community engagement efforts. The position focuses on guiding and energizing a network of more than 80 local and topic-based Leadership Council members, coordinating with corporate sponsors and community partners, and helping deliver 65+ events each year that support LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs.
Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Leadership and Council Support
- Recruit, onboard, and transition Leadership Council Chairs across established and new regional chapters while keeping the work aligned with annual growth goals.
- Support council leaders with outreach approaches, volunteer recruitment resources, code-of-conduct guidance, and local engagement assistance.
- Help Council Chairs plan meaningful local events that grow StartOut’s founder network.
- Run annual training on board duties, meeting leadership, and high-quality event delivery.
- Review volunteer and board makeup each month and turn the findings into quarterly DEI insights and actions.
- Provide planning kits, templates, and playbooks for local teams, and serve as the main contact for urgent regional council needs.
Event Operations and Performance Tracking
- Coordinate end-to-end logistics for community events, including venues, vendors, attendee tracking, speaker and judge outreach, registration flows, in-kind support, fundraising, and local budgets.
- Monitor event KPIs, lead generation, and conversion metrics, then recommend improvements for future programs.
- Make sure community initiatives reflect and celebrate the many intersections within the LGBTQ+ founder community.
- Lead post-event review conversations, gather partner feedback, and prepare formal post-mortem summaries to improve future execution.
