Associate, Museum Educator

About the Role

The National Urban League's Urban Civil Rights Museum in Harlem is looking for an Associate Museum Educator to lead educational guided tours and programs for K-12 groups, private visitors, and public audiences during museum operating hours. This role involves being the primary point of contact between the museum and its diverse audiences, ensuring high-quality educational experiences and upholding professional standards.

Visitors engaged include local residents, tourists, students, professionals, seniors, activists, artists, and community members from various backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct guided tours tailored to K-12 students, groups, and general visitors.
• Create and deliver inquiry-based tours rooted in museum content, research, and materials.
• Contribute to updating and enhancing tour options, interpretive resources, and in-depth exhibition content.
• Design and implement workshops, gallery activities, and educational programs for youth, families, and intergenerational groups.
• Develop curricula and resources for K-12 schools and teacher training aligned with museum exhibitions.
• Support adult education, docent training, weekend programs, and special events.
• Maintain records on program participation and assist with periodic reporting.
• Handle administrative tasks including monitoring payments, managing educational materials, and logistical support.
• Assist in crafting and distributing educational communications like newsletters and outreach materials.
• Collaborate effectively across departments to foster a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
• Participate in ongoing staff development and meetings.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree is preferred, particularly in fields like Museum Studies, Fine Art, History, or Communications.
• At least three to five years of relevant experience in museums, schools, or nonprofit organizations.
• Demonstrated experience collaborating across multiple disciplines.
• Understanding and experience in museum or K-12 educational environments, including working with diverse learners such as those with disabilities or English language learners.
• Experience with object-based and inquiry-focused education methods is advantageous.

Requirements and Skills

• Excellent organization and attention to detail.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, chiefly Excel and SharePoint.
• Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
• Professionalism, sound judgment, and integrity.
• Knowledge of African American culture, history, or familiarity with Harlem communities is a plus.
• Spanish language skills considered an asset.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• The position requires working from Wednesday through Sunday onsite, with potential nights as needed.
• Hybrid work options are available when the museum is closed.
• Physical demands include lifting up to 15 pounds, standing and walking extensively during tours and workshops, as well as sitting for computer work.
• Maneuvering around the museum to set up equipment and materials is necessary.
