Position Overview

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CEB) at the University of Cambridge invites applications for the role of Assistant Professor starting October 2026 or shortly thereafter. Upon successful completion of the probation period, the successful candidate will advance to the position of Associate Professor.

Located at the West Cambridge site, the Department boasts an annual research income of approximately £15 million and is renowned globally for pioneering advancements in molecular science and technology intersecting biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Role Expectations

The appointee will be expected to establish and lead a research group of international repute while fulfilling teaching duties constituting approximately 30% of their workload, with research comprising the remaining 70%. They should be prepared to teach and examine broadly across the Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology Tripos curriculum, which includes substantial biotechnology content. A proven record in teaching is preferred, and flexibility to teach beyond one’s direct research focus is essential.

Research Focus

This role targets candidates whose research emphasis is in the broad field of Biotechnology, with a particular interest in candidates who can enhance the department’s strategic priorities in sustainability and healthcare. Specific interests include Synthetic and Engineering Biology, Biomaterials, Bio-interface Science and Technology, Agritech and Plant Biotechnology, Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology, Computational, Data and AI-driven Biotechnology, as well as other emerging relevant areas. Both theoretical and experimental research approaches are welcomed, with research excellence being the primary selection criterion.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated original research contributions as reflected in publications in leading international journals. They will secure external funding supporting their research, and actively participate in teaching, supervision, and examination at undergraduate and graduate levels. Promoting a collegial and positive research environment within their group and the broader department community is strongly expected.

Selection Process
