직무 설명

Role overview

This post is based at NPS 31 Normanby Road, Scunthorpe, DN15 6AS and NPS 41 Queens Road, Hull, HU5 2QW. Residential Workers support Approved Premises, which are staffed residences for people released from prison who need close supervision as they move back into the community.

The work is carried out entirely on site; home working and hybrid working are not available. The role runs on an annualised-hours pattern, giving some choice over working days in line with business needs. You must share your availability with your line manager three months ahead and that pattern needs to include a blend of weekday, night and weekend shifts. The post is part of a rolling rota covering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and every bank holiday.

This is a mobile-grade role, so you may occasionally be asked to cover shifts at other Approved Premises locations rather than only at your usual base, subject to policy. Shortlisted candidates should expect a face-to-face interview and an introduction to the Approved Premises setting. If successful but not immediately placed, your name may be kept on a merit list for 12 months for future Residential Worker openings.

What the role involves

You will work as part of a team providing continuous cover at an Approved Premises. The job includes security and monitoring duties, along with day-to-day support for people on probation who are living at the premises. You will help contribute to risk management plans and sentence plan goals, and you will report any meaningful changes in risk, re-offending concerns or non-compliance using the agreed enforcement procedures so that residents, staff and the building remain safe and secure throughout your shift.

Residential Workers play an important part in rehabilitation by helping residents make positive changes and successfully resettle into the community. The work is varied, demanding and meaningful, and offers the chance to make a real difference to individuals, the public and the wider community.

Pay and working pattern

If appointed, the starting salary is £28,064 pro rata. In addition to the annual salary, regular unsocial hours attract enhanced payments.

  • Monday to Friday, 7:00 pm to 8:00 am: 30% premium pay
  • Saturday 8:00 am to Monday 8:00 am: 50% premium pay
  • Public and bank holidays, 8:00 am to 8:00 am: 50% premium pay plus time off in lieu for the actual hours worked

This position includes substantial out-of-hours working, including waking night duty and weekend cover.

Eligibility and requirements

You do not need a degree for this post. The team is looking for someone with the right personal qualities, and experience of working with people who face social or personal difficulties would be an advantage. Strong empathy, patience and resilience are important, along with good numeracy and literacy because the job involves report writing.

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK and in the Civil Service. This role is not eligible for a new Skilled Worker visa under current immigration rules.

Nationality rules for Civil Service recruitment apply. The role is broadly open to UK nationals, Irish nationals, Commonwealth nationals with UK work rights, and certain EU, Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic or Liechtenstein nationals and their eligible family members with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.

Recruitment process

To apply, you must complete a short application form and answer two behaviour-based questions plus one experience-based question. Your application will be reviewed after the closing date, and you will be informed of the outcome afterwards. Selection is based on Success Profiles and will assess behaviours, strengths and experience.

Behaviours assessed in the process include communicating and influencing, working together, developing self and others, and making effective decisions.

Checks and other conditions

Successful candidates must pass a criminal record check. Anyone working with government assets must also complete baseline personnel security standard checks.

The employer notes that artificial intelligence can be used only as a support tool in preparing an application; all examples must be truthful, personally experienced and not copied or generated as someone else’s work. Applications may be withdrawn if plagiarism is identified, and internal candidates may face disciplinary action.

Where immediate placement is not possible, appointed candidates may be retained on a merit list for 12 months to fill future Residential Worker vacancies at Approved Premises.

Benefits and support

  • Access to learning and development
  • Flexible working options that support work-life balance
  • An inclusive and diverse working culture
  • Civil Service pension with an employer contribution of 28.97%
  • Annual leave
  • Public holidays
  • Season ticket advance
