Role Overview

As a Youth Worker at Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children, based in Hamilton, Waikato, you will focus on supporting young people by prioritizing their wellbeing, recognizing their potential, and helping them achieve successful outcomes. This role is vital in providing a positive influence and nurturing a safe environment for youth, especially those involved with the justice system.

Key Responsibilities

• Championing the positive development of rangatahi through building trust and encouraging their inherent capabilities
• Providing consistent support, aroha, and a secure environment for young people
• Collaborating with whānau and other stakeholders involved in the rangatahi’s care plan
• Supporting the implementation of non-social work elements in young people's care plans alongside Social Workers
• Participating in meetings with rangatahi and professionals from sectors such as Police, Education, Health, and community agencies
• Coordinating and attending appointments for rangatahi, including recreational activities and visits that do not require a Social Worker
• Helping young people develop life skills like budgeting and shopping to promote independence
• Assisting rangatahi during Family Group Conferences and other relevant meetings
• Completing administrative duties, documentation, and providing feedback to the team
• Potentially visiting homes or meeting with whānau to support the rangatahi

Candidate Profile

• Possessing a realistic outlook and resilience to handle the challenges faced by youth who often have complex backgrounds and involvement with the Youth Justice system
• Ability to foster empathetic, tolerant, consistent, and understanding relationships with young people
• Relevant training or qualifications in Youth Work preferred
• Strong interpersonal and engagement skills to overcome barriers and build rapport
• Experience in conflict resolution
• Cultural competency, particularly in Māori and Pacifica contexts, including an understanding of tikanga Māori
• Established networking skills and understanding of local community resources
• Comfortable using computers and MS Office applications; competent in report writing
• Current full driver’s license and willingness to work some weekends
• Flexibility with working hours, and experience or transferable skills related to social services or working with at-risk youth

Compensation and Benefits

The position offers a salary starting from NZD 57,760 up to NZD 65,334 annually depending on experience, with step-based progression through tenure.
