About GovTech
GovTech is Singapore’s lead public-sector technology agency, driving Smart Nation efforts and digital transformation across government. As the Centre of Excellence for Infocomm Technology and Smart Systems, it builds capabilities in data science and AI, application development, smart city technology, digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity.
The organisation aims to provide meaningful careers that help improve lives, while supporting continuous learning and growth throughout the year. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to Singapore’s Smart Nation vision and create technology solutions for public good.
About the Role
The Workplace Engineer (MOE) reports to the Technical Service Manager and sits within the School Infrastructure team in the Digital Workspace for Schools Branch, part of MOE’s Digital Excellence & Products Division. The role works with both internal and external stakeholders to deliver services and projects that keep school ICT infrastructure, applications, and services reliable and available.
The position involves taking end-to-end ownership of medium-scale infrastructure services, with responsibility for their availability, scalability, performance, and security. You are expected to work largely independently, designing, implementing, and operating infrastructure solutions with limited supervision while supporting the team’s objectives and the Ministry’s wider digitalisation goals.
Service and Operations Management
You will handle service management, incident and problem management, and disaster recovery planning for ICT services used by schools. This includes managing contractors, tracking deliverables, and ensuring contract commitments and service level agreements are achieved.
You will continuously improve ICT services to meet both present and future school needs, while engaging schools to set expectations and improve the overall service experience. Governance and quality compliance are also part of the role, including adherence to technical architecture standards, security controls, and government IT policies. You will also support the Ministry Family Digitalisation Plan within the broader MOE IT Division.
Engineering and Delivery
You will complete infrastructure work accurately and efficiently, building modular and reusable automation solutions. Infrastructure-as-code should be applied consistently for deployments and changes. The role also involves setting up and improving monitoring, alerting, and observability, then using data and analysis to diagnose issues and raise system performance.
You will use site reliability engineering practices such as error budgets, SLI/SLO frameworks, and toil reduction in daily operations. In addition, you will create and maintain procedures for installing, configuring, and managing end-user devices and enterprise software so that they meet functionality, security, and policy requirements.
You will contribute to agency-wide standards that improve consistency, supportability, and compliance across user environments and platforms. The role also includes managing central software deployments and updates, assessing end-user devices, enterprise software, and endpoint protection tools against policy needs, and balancing usability, security, and operational effort when making design choices.
You will also develop tools and scripts to automate device and software administration at an agency level. Work should be driven from planning to completion with minimal oversight, with proactive issue identification, early risk communication, and follow-up on production feedback, proof-of-concept results, and bug reports.
Ownership and Ways of Working
You are expected to take full responsibility for assigned tasks and projects, recognise when support is needed, and know who to approach for help. The role also calls for a mindset of continuous improvement, willingness to support teammates, and a strong sense of accountability.
Your work should stay aligned with team priorities and the Ministry’s digitalisation direction, with the ability to adapt to changing needs while focusing on the highest-value outcomes. You will be expected to collaborate well with colleagues and stakeholders, address disagreements respectfully, share knowledge openly, and contribute to a transparent, learning-oriented culture.
What We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate is a capable infrastructure engineer with practical experience in modern workplace engineering, including observability, infrastructure automation, and site reliability engineering. You should be comfortable making technical decisions on your own and using your skills to improve the reliability, performance, and security of the systems you manage.
You should also be a proactive and collaborative team player who communicates clearly, takes initiative, and is committed to both personal growth and the success of the wider team. Experience in government or education environments, as well as familiarity with government IT governance frameworks, will be an advantage.
Benefits and Work Culture
