About the role
Airways New Zealand manages one of the world’s largest airspace regions, supporting safe flight operations across New Zealand and its surrounding oceanic area. As a Technical Coordinator, you will play a key role in helping maintain the technology that keeps air navigation services running continuously.
This is a Christchurch-based position within a 24/7 operations centre. The work is technical, time-sensitive, and safety-critical. You will be responsible for first-line response when systems need attention: assessing faults, diagnosing issues, resolving what you can, coordinating urgent actions, and escalating to specialist teams or field support when required.
The company is hiring two people for this role.
What you will do
- Oversee and coordinate essential air navigation systems at all hours.
- Take the lead during incidents, outages, faults, and other service interruptions across the network.
- Weigh operational risk and shifting priorities to help keep air traffic moving safely.
- Work with technicians, engineers, and service providers to restore and sustain services.
- Serve as the link between Air Traffic Control, technology teams, and external partners.
- Give concise advice and assess the likely impact of incidents and planned maintenance.
- Make clear decisions and communicate effectively when pressure is high.
What you bring
We are looking for someone who is technically capable, quick to analyse problems, and steady under pressure. A background in electronics, telecommunications, IT networking, radio frequency systems, avionics, or a similar discipline would be well suited to this role. More important than any single background is the ability to think clearly and act decisively when systems are under strain.
- At least 3 years of practical experience in avionics, IT, telecommunications, networking, RF, or a related technical field.
- A trade qualification, degree, or comparable technical experience, such as B.Eng. Tech or an equivalent.
- Experience handling multiple systems and priorities in an operational environment.
- Strong fault-finding ability and a genuine interest in understanding root causes.
- Confident communication with both technical specialists and non-technical stakeholders.
- A willingness to keep learning and develop beyond the first year in the role.
Preferred experience
- Previous exposure to aviation or avionics systems.
- Experience in a regulated or safety-critical environment such as defence, utilities, transport, or emergency services.
- Knowledge of incident management or operations frameworks such as ITIL.
- Familiarity with condition monitoring tools, SCADA, or network management systems.
What is on offer
- A fully paid 12 to 18 month development programme covering internal systems, aviation regulation, and the operational environment.
- Competitive base pay with additional penal rates for shift and weekend work.
- Five weeks of annual leave.
- Enhanced parental leave.
- A clear route for career growth.
- Health and wellbeing support, retailer discounts, and a collaborative team culture.
Eligibility and application details
Applicants must be legally eligible to work in New Zealand.
The closing date for applications is Monday, 27 July 2026. Candidates are asked to submit a CV and a short cover letter through the Airways careers website.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The selection process includes an alignment discussion followed by a video questionnaire for additional information.
The successful candidate will need to complete pre-employment checks, which may include reference checks, drug and alcohol screening, and a criminal conviction check.
