About the Role and Organisation

This role is based within the Clinical Biochemistry department of the NHS East and Southeast London Pathology Partnership (ESEL), a collaborative organisation jointly owned by Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Hosted by Barts Health NHS Trust, ESEL operates with its own governance structure and a board in which each partner trust holds equal voting rights. It is one of the largest pathology service providers in the NHS, combining expertise from the partner trusts to deliver high-quality, cost-effective pathology services.

The Clinical Biochemistry service is a network spanning seven hospital laboratories, anchored at The Royal London Hospital (RLH), a major trauma center and hub for London Air Ambulance services. The network also includes laboratories at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital, Newham Hospital, Homerton Hospital, Lewisham Hospital, and Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide professional biomedical science services primarily at St Bartholomew’s Hospital laboratory, with flexibility to support other ESEL sites as needed.
• Participate actively in extended day, night, and weekend shift rotas to ensure consistent clinical service delivery.
• Utilize expert knowledge in automated biochemistry technologies and methodologies in daily laboratory operations.
• Support local clinical services through dedicated teamwork and responsiveness to patient needs.

Qualifications and Mandatory Criteria

• Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist is essential.
• Documentation of qualification standards depending on year of certification:
  • If qualified before 2003: valid CPSM logbook in Clinical Biochemistry.
  • If qualified from 2003 to 2004: registration portfolio with the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) in Clinical Biochemistry and the IBMS Diploma in Biomedical Science (Blood Sciences) awarded in 2005.
  • If qualified from 2005 onwards: Specialist Diploma in Clinical Biochemistry from IBMS.
• All compliance documents must be clearly indicated in the application.

Organisational Context

The Pathology Partnership was established in May 2021 to integrate services across multiple trusts, featuring a unified Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Quality Management System (QMS). It operates a main hub at RLH with Essential Service Laboratories across six other hospitals. The partnership's operational divisions include Blood Sciences (Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Biochemistry), Microbiology and Virology, and Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics.

For the fiscal year 2024/25, the Partnership's annual operating budget is approximately £121 million, supporting a workforce of around 860 whole-time equivalent staff members. The organisation champions inclusive values promoting diversity, belonging, and an inclusive culture for all employees.
