Position Overview

The Service Worker, Facilities is responsible for a wide range of facility maintenance, repair, and support activities across the Olds College campus. Working under the AUPE Collective Agreement (Job Classification: Service Worker 3), this role focuses strongly on operational excellence, proactive hazard identification, health and safety, and superior customer service for campus stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Respond to service requests dispatched through the facilities management office and ensure tasks are completed quickly and effectively.
• Relocate heavy equipment and furniture around campus as needed.
• Conduct snow and ice removal operations to maintain safe walkways and entrances.
• Assist with shipping and receiving when extra manual support is required by facilities operations.
• Install, maintain, and repair a wide variety of physical structures and fixtures: drywall, cabinets, doors, windows, desks, planters, furniture, tiles, and more.
• Fabricate or modify materials as needed for maintenance and repairs.
• Accurately document all repairs and operational activities.
• Operate and maintain assigned tools and heavy equipment (such as skid steers, forklifts) in line with institutional safety standards.
• Perform regular health and safety walkthroughs to spot hazards and log findings for remediation.
• Handle and dispose of bio-hazardous materials in strict accordance with policy.
• Support certified trades professionals in electrical, plumbing, and mechanical projects.
• Maintain a professional, inclusive, and transparent communication style when interacting with all members of the College community.

Qualifications and Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
• Current WHMIS and First Aid certifications required.
• A minimum of 2 years' relevant work experience in a facilities or maintenance role.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Demonstrated ability to operate heavy machinery, including skid steers and forklifts.
• Carpentry and apprenticeship training are assets.
• Strong computer skills and ability to quickly adapt to new technology.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, time management, and customer service abilities.
• Proven capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.

Conditions of Employment

• Must be available for flexible scheduling, including weekends, evenings, early mornings, and on-call snow removal.
• Successful completion of a criminal and vulnerable sector background check without offenses.
• Frequent work outdoors in harsh weather conditions, especially during winter storms.
• Physical capability to lift heavy objects, operate machinery, and perform manual labor for extended periods.
• Strict compliance with all personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety policies.
